  1. From a paragraph to an essay Brought to you by Mr. Meléndez

  2. What are some of the qualities of a good parent? Use specific details and examples to explain your answer.

  3. A good parent should have three essential qualities. Clearly, the first quality of a good parent is education. If parents have proper education they will be able to build a strong educational background for their children. Also, parents should be dedicated and caring with their children. If they watch their children properly then there will be less probability for them to be spoiled. Finally, one good parent should have lots of patience to deal with their child properly. These three qualities will help us to have better human beings and as a consequence a better world.

  4. Parents are the best gift children can have from God. They play the most important role in their children's lives. A child learns the basic things as well as many other things from their parents. That’s why I think a good parent should have three essential qualities. One of the most renowned leaders Napoleon said in one of his speeches; "Give me an educated mother; I will give you an educated nation". From his statement it is clearly understood that the first quality of a good parent is education. If parents have proper education they will be able to build a strong educational background for their children. They will be their teacher, guide and philosopher. Home is the basic foundation of a child's life. They begin to learn at their home. And there is no doubt that parents play the main role there. Parents should be dedicated and caring with their children. One good parent should check his child's everyday activities both in school and home. They should realize their child's needs, likes, dislikes, feelings and objectives. If they watch their child properly then there will be less probability for their children to be spoiled. Statistics reveal that spoiled and drug addicted people come from families with divorced parents or they were not happy in their family life or they had bad companies. If one parent is friendly and caring with their child they will observe and check their child's friends too. That means being their child's best friends. So friendliness is also a good quality for a good parent. Last but not least, one good parent should have lots of patience to deal with their child properly. There should not be any communication gap between a good parent and their kids. Parents should be understanding, frank and have enough dedication to build an ideal child. It is true that people are not taught to be parents; however if we want to have a better society in the future, I firmly believe parents should start cultivating these three important values mentioned above as soon as possible. The achievement of this will ensure a better world with better human beings.

  5. Even though Trujillo has a lot of things to offer, in my opinion, it is one of the least desirable places to live. First of all, it has a chaotic traffic. This negative situation makes people waste a lot of time, especially at rush hour where you can be trapped for more than half an hour Another problem affecting this city is the increasing rate of crime. People feel really insecure with the many crimes happening everyday. If theses problems are not solved, they will affect people’s economy, development and stability.

  6. Everyone is always talking about the fantastic things Trujillo has to offer. Many tourists praise the wonderful tourist sites like Chan-Chan for example. But, actually, I think that Trujillo is horrible. In the lines below, I will demonstrate why the intense and heavy trafficas well as the rising rate of crimemake Trujillo one of the least desirable places to grow up. One the most negative things Trujillo has nowadays is its chaotic traffic. Since Trujillo is a relatively small city, the excessive number of cars transforms its main streets in an endless and a stressing snake of smoke and loud noise. The obvious outcome we have to put up with is the incredible amount of time people waste. Sometimes, especially at rush hour, you can be stuck in traffic for at least forty five minutes. The other problem affecting this city, probably the most dangerous, is the rising rate of crime. Everyday newspapers display news about a murder or shooting or assault. This situation is creating a sense of insecurity among people and is seriously damaging the city image. People are really concerned and do not know what to do to cope and solve the problem. Even though Trujillo has once been considered one of the best cities of Peru, these two negative factors have made it one of the least desirable places to settle down. If they are not solved, they will end up damaging more than the city image, affecting people’s economy, development and stability.

  7. Reading habits that slow you down As you work to build your reading speed, you must consider four common adverse reading habits that can slow you down. The first, vocalizing, is mouthing or saying the words aloud as you read them. It is a problem because the act of mouthing or speaking slows you down; it takes too much time to say the words with your lips. Unfortunately, the second problem is much harder to detect. It is called subvocalizing, and it is characterized by a reader’s forming the words in his or her larynx. The third problem reading habit is pointing. When you point with your finger or a pencil or a ruler, you add another mechanical step to the reading process. This can only slow you down. The last problem is head movement. Following the lines of print with your head does not increase reading speed. Like pointing, it adds another mechanical step to the reading process. Of course, there are other reading problems that affect reading speed, but these four are the most common. Each can be diagnosed fairly easy, though, and corrected with practice over time.

  8. Reading habits that slow you down In order to succeed academically and professionally, you need to read a lot. To do it you have to be able to read fast and efficiently. As you work to build your reading speed, you must consider four common adverse reading habits that can slow you down. The first, vocalizing, is mouthing or saying the words aloud as you read them. It is easy to spot someone who has this problem. And vocalizing is a problem, because the act of mouthing or speaking slows you down; it takes too much time to say the words with your lips. There are several ways to help yourself stop vocalizing. Try chewing gum or holding a pencil clenched between your teeth as you read. Or , put your hand over your mouth or keep it at your throat to feel for vibrations of vocalizing. Unfortunately, the second problem reading habit is much harder to detect. It is called subvocalizing, and it is characterized by a reader’s forming the words in his or her larynx. In order to avoid pronouncing internally the words you read, practice reading rapidly under timed conditions, or talk about the material to yourself. The third problem reading habit is pointing. When you point with your finger or a pencil or a ruler, you add another mechanical step to the reading process. This can only slow you down. The solution is to make pointing impossible by folding your hands in your laps. The last problem reading habit is head movement. Following the lines of print with your head does not increase reading speed. Like pointing, it adds another mechanical step to the reading process. To avoid it, hold your chin in your hand, or place your hand against the side of your head. Of course, there are other reading problems that affect reading speed, but these four are the most common. Each can be diagnosed fairly easy, though, and corrected with practice over time.

  9. The joys of reading The most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never learned the pleasure of reading. What joys can you expect to find in reading? Aladdin had a wonderful lamp. By rubbing it he could go anywhere he chose or have anything he wanted. A reader of good books has such a lamp. When you open your book, you are carried away to a world of adventure. Without a ticket you may travel to any part of the world you chose. Through stories and poems you can share the adventures of others. What is more, with your Aladdin’s lamp of reading, you are the master not only of space, but also of time. The first joy of reading, then, is the privilege of sharing the experiences of people of every century and from any part of the world. The second joy of reading is even greater. We can find in books the knowledge and wisdom of thousands of years. Our society has seen great changes in the last fifty years, and only books can tell us what those changes are all about. By reading we can learn much about the world we live in, about human conduct and in the long run about ourselves. Trough books, our eyes are opened to the beauty of the world in which we live. This is the third joy of reading. Once more our Aladdin’s lamp enriches our lives and opens our eyes to the wonders and beauties that lie about us.Reading is a pleasure of the mind, and nothing can take the place of it.Only by reading can you find your purpose in life.

  10. If you read thirty minutes a day, you would read half a book a week, two books a month, and twenty-four books a year. If you read a thousand books in your lifetime, it would be equal to going through college five times. You could be an authority on any subject you chose. Maybe your teachers never stop stressing the importance of reading. Neither do your parents, to be sure. The importance of reading cannot be emphasized too much no life is meaningful without reading books. It is said that the most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never learned the pleasure of reading. You can be with brave men and women in distant lands, on the sea, or outer space. What is more, with your Aladdin’s lamp of reading, you are the master not only of space, but also of time. You can go back many centuries to the first people in history, or you can meet the science-fiction heroes of the future. How can we make up our minds about new ideas, if we do not understand those ideas? We should also read literature. The human problems repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different authors. By reading literature we can learn much about the world we live in, about human conduct and in the long run about ourselves. Albert Einstein thought books are among the most valuable assets of mankind. He said: “I do not believe that civilization will be wiped out in a war fought with the atomic bomb. Perhaps two thirds of the people of the earth might be killed. But enough men capable of thinking, and enough books, would be left to start again, and civilization could be restored.” Trough books, our eyes are opened to the beauty of the world in which we live. This is the third joy of reading. We hear the wind drive the fallen leaves or hurry the clouds across the sky or wrinkle the waters of the sea. We see the mountains high above the golden fields. A bird’s song, a flower, a tree – all these the poet helps us to see and feel. Once more our Aladdin’s lamp enriches our lives and opens our eyes to the wonders and beauties that lie about us. Reading is a pleasure of the mind, and nothing can take the place of it.An evening spent reading great books does for our minds what a holiday in the mountains does for our bodies. We come down from those high tops stronger, and we are better prepared to face our daily lives with courage. Reading is like eating peanuts. Once you begin, you are likely to go on and on. So take the time to read! Read what you want instead of what other people expect you to read. Books have changed people’s minds and they have changed history. Only by reading can you find your purpose in life.

  11. Reading habit that slow you down Besides vocalizing, subvocalizing, pointing and head movement, poor vocabulary is a fifth problem that can slow your reading speed. Developing a good vocabulary will help you improve both your reading speed and your comprehension. One way to improve your vocabulary is to read a lot. The more you read, the more your vocabulary will grow. You can also improve your vocabulary by paying attention to new words. To figure out what a new word means, use context clues from the sentence. If context clues don’t help, look up the meaning of the word in a dictionary. Then, make a special effort to learn it. Keeping a vocabulary notebook will also help. If possible, get involved in an organized vocabulary program in class. Use a vocabulary workbook and complete at least one lesson per week. Finally, become aware of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Ward Cramer states it is possible to double your vocabulary by learning no more than a couple dozen prefixes. The key to developing your vocabulary is by beingawareof new words, by discovering their meanings, by committing them to memory, and by using them in your conversations.
