  1. Perfection and Maturity

  2. Introduction • Let us consider various passages that use the Greek word telos or one of its derivatives, defined by BDAG as: • a point of time marking the end of a duration, end, termination, cessation; • the last part of a process, close, conclusion, esp. of the last things, the final act in the cosmic drama; • the goal toward which a movement is being directed, end, goal, outcome; • last in a series, rest, remainder; • revenue obligation, (indirect) tax, toll-tax, customs duties.”

  3. The Perfection of Deity • Perfection is seen in the person, plans and purposes of God (Matthew 5:48). • Messianic prophecies have been fulfilled (Luke 18:30-33; 22:37; John 19:28; 19:30; Acts 13:26-30). • The work of Jesus Christ has been accomplished (John 4:34; 5:36; 17:4; Hebrews 2:10; 5:8-9; 7:28; 9:11-12; 10:14; 12:1-2). • The Word of God is perfect and complete (1 Corinthians 13:8-10; James 1:17-18; James 1:21-25).

  4. The Maturity of Man • Disciples are repeatedly admonished to strive for perfection/maturity (Matthew 5:48; Ephesians 4:11-13; Colossians 1:28-29; Colossians 4:12-13; James 1:2-4; 3:2-5).

  5. Perfection • Evidenced by genuine unity (John 17:22-23; Colossians 3:12-14). • Proved by willing self-sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2). • Marked by fixed focus (Acts 20:24; Philippians 3:12-17; 2 Timothy 4:7-8; 1 Peter 1:13-16).

  6. Perfection • Manifested in mature understanding (1 Corinthians 2:6-7; 1 Corinthians 14:20; Hebrews 5:12-6:3). • Observed in faithful obedience (Luke 8:11-15; James 2:21-24). • Witnessed in perfected love (1 John 2:3-5; 4:11-12, 16-19).

  7. Conclusion • Would you be perfect (Matthew 19:16-22)? • Will you be counted among the redeemed (Hebrews 12:22-24)?
