  1. Welcome to the Kindergarten ABC’s Massey Ranch 2008- 2009

  4. Absences- If your child is absent, you must send a note to the school within 3 days of when he/she returns.  Please include your child’s name, teacher’s name, date of absence, and the reason for the absence. Excessive absences hinder a child’s progress.   

  5. Assessment-We use several instruments to assess students in Kindergarten. We give the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) in August and May.  This assessment helps identify your child’s reading level.  We also use the Observation Survey.  Report card assessment is done every six weeks.

  6. Arrival- Your child should arrive at school no earlier than 7:30. If your child needs to eat breakfast he/she may go to the cafeteria. If your child does not need to eat breakfast he/she will need to go to the kinder hallway and read/write until bell rings.

  8. Birthdays – You are allowed to send birthday invitations to school. Please send enough for the whole class or you may choose to invite all girls or all boys. • You may send cupcakes/cookies in individual servings for your child’s class. They need to be brought in the morning and will be given to the students during the last 15 minutes of the day.

  9. Backpacks-Your child should bring their backpack to school daily. The backpack should be large enough to hold a binder.  Backpacks help your child carry their binder, notes, projects, and books to and from school.  Please check your child’s backpack DAILY.  • Make sure that you have their backpack labeled with their name.

  10. Breakfast-Breakfast is served beginning at 7:30 A.M. each morning.  The cost of breakfast is $1.25.  Parents are encouraged to pre-pay their meals by sending a check or cash to the cafeteria.

  12. Conferences- If you feel the need to contact your child’s teacher at any time, please call the school, send a note, or email them to make arrangements for scheduling a conference.  Our conference period is 12:40–1:35

  13. COLD- the temperature in a classroom changes throughout the day. Please send a light jacket/sweater for your child in case they get cold during the day. • Please make sure that the jacket/sweater is labeled with your child’s name.

  15. Dress Code -Students should be dressed in accordance to the P.I.S.D. dress code.  Girls should wear shorts under their dress. Please label all clothing sent to school with your child’s name!

  16. Dismissal-Dismissal is at 3:00 P.M.  Please do not come to the classroom to pick your child up.  Your child will be dismissed by their teacher and will go to the designated pick up locations with a kindergarten teacher.

  18. Emergency Cards-Your child will have an emergency card on file in the office and Nurse’s clinic.  At least two working phone numbers are required in order to contact parents in case of illness or emergency. Please make sure the numbers stay current throughout the year.

  20. Field Trips-We will take a field trip sometime in the fall.  A permission slip will be required for the field trip. If we do not receive a permission slip, your child will not be allowed to go with the class. You must fill out a criminal history form in order to attend! • Please visit the Pearland I.S.D Website to fill out the criminal history form.

  21. Fire Drills-Your child will participate in frequent fire drills throughout the year.  We will practice the procedures before our first fire drill so that your child will be prepared.

  23. Going Home- If your child will be going home a different way than what the teacher has on file, you MUST call the school by 2:00 or send them a note.  They will not let your child go with another adult/student or a different way unless you have notified them.

  25. Handwriting-We use D’Nealian handwriting at Massey Ranch Elementary.  Please practice the correct strokes with your child.

  27. Illness-Please do not send your child to school if he/she has a temperature.  If your child becomes ill at school, you will be called to come and get your child.

  29. Join in the fun • Come and join us for some exciting kindergarten activities such as: • Kindergarten Rodeo • Field Trip • Classroom Activities

  31. Kindergarten Kids-Kindergarten is a special time for your child.  We want to make this experience the best possible.  “Kids come first!”

  32. Keep updated on important information about your child’s classroom by reading their “Peek at the Week” newsletter in their “MACK” binder or on the Massey website.

  34. Library - Your child will be visiting the school library ! Your child will begin checking out books through the library. Please help your child be responsible with his/her book that they check out.

  35. Lunch- The cost of lunch is $2.25 for your child.  If you would like to purchase a lunch and eat with your child, the cost is $3.10. You are welcome to come and eat with your child or bring a lunch to him/her.  Please sign in at the office and wait for us in the cafeteria.

  37. “Mack” binder - binders will be sent home daily.  Please review your child’s behavior with them. If they are on RED a note will be sent home for you to sign and return. • You should sign and return them to school on a daily basis.

  38. Math Tubs-We use math tubs in addition to our math curriculum.  Free exploration in math tubs is an excellent way to stimulate creativity.

Nurse’s Clinic-Nurse Hechler is our school nurse.  If your child becomes sick while at school she will take care of them until you can be reached to pick him/her up from school.  She also administers all medications to students during school hours. • Please do not send medication with the students. • You will need to fill out an information sheet on all medication you want your student to take before it can be administered.

  42. Outside-Your child will have outside time daily, weather permitting.  Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.

  44. Physical Education- Your child will participate in PE while at Massey Ranch. • Your teacher will give you a schedule of the days you will be attending PE. • Please send your child in rubber soled shoes on those days.

  45. Parties-We will have three parties throughout the year. These will include a winter party, valentines party and an end of the year party. • Our room parent will contact you if you would like to help with our celebrations. 

  46. PTA (Parent/Teacher Association)-All parents are encouraged to join the school’s PTA. Information will be in your beginning of the year packet.

  48. Questions-Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education.  They will make every effort to meet with you and discuss your concerns.

  50. Report Cards-We are on a six-week grading period.  Your child will receive a report card each six-weeks. If you feel the need to discuss your child’s report card, your child’s teacher will be happy to meet with you!
