  1. Basic Theology:What is Most “Basic”POWERPOINT 1A

  2. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  3. The center of Christ’s teaching:THREE PASSAGES • The double commandment • What Jesus himself clearly emphasizes • John 3:16 • How John summarizes the Christian faith • From the Council of Trent • Keeping theological priorities straight Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings

  4. Jesus emphasizes the “double commandment” “… a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?’ And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.’” (Matthew 22:35-40) “the double commandment” is “the great commandment” : love God, love neighbor • It is the core of the Christian teaching. • It is the purpose and source of Christian theology.

  5. How does “John 3:16” sum up the Christian faith? “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” • John 3:16: this verse from John’s gospel contains the core of the Christian faith; • This is a stunning teaching about what God, the Creator, is like and expresses who Christ is for Christians; • Christian theology is the attempt to express that faith and all its implications for who God is and how we know Him.

  6. The link between theology and the love of God (Trent). “The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope or for action, the love of our Lord must always be made accessible, so that anyone can see that all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective than to arrive at love.” Roman Catechism – Trent; quoted by John Paul II at the end of the Prologue of Catechism

  7. What is the most basic goal of theology? (Council of Trent) “The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope or for action, the love of our Lord must always be made accessible, so that anyone can see that all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective than to arrive at love.” Trent (from Prologue of CCC) Theology’s goal (according to Council of Trent): • Is to teach the love of Christ : love of God, and love of neighbor as self. • Is not just ideas but is an effort of the mind directed to the heart. If it is not leading to love, it has missed its mark. • Is not just “info” about God, but should lead to the love of God and inspire with the love of God. • Is to be connected to virtue, showing the connection between the teaching of faith and the living of love.

  8. Red Letter OutlinePPT 1A – What’s Most Basic? MOST BASIC TO CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY: • The “double commandment, ” emphasized by Jesus himself, teaches us to “love God with whole heart, mind, strength, and our neighbor as yourself.” • we encounter this commandment in our experience • John 3:16 teaches of a God who loves so much as to give up His only Son, even to death, so that we might live • we realize how much God loves; who the God of Israel really is • The Council of Trent emphasizes that theology must be in touch with love, if not it has missed its mark. • we reflect on this awareness of the love of God and illuminate its meaning
