WP2Hints and Illustrations about database tool used for B-Learn 3nd meeting in Porto, Portogal November 13-14, 2006 Collecting the Research Results Cecilie Hansen
In this presentation I will describe how we collected information for the WP2 Deliverables “Collection of Research Results”
Who was involved in WP2? • Lead partner: University of Bergen • Participating: University of Tartu and University of Helsinki
Time Frame for WP2 • Dec 05 – Oct 06 • UiB (Lead partner): 45 days • UoT & UoH: 40 days each • Altogether: 125 person days of effort
What tasks were Involved in WP2? • Developing a methodological framework for meta-analysis • Searching data-bases in the field of education on previous research on blended learning • Systematising information • Writing reports
What to do? Provide detailed reports on: • Theories of Blended Learning • Strategies of how Blended Learning can be integrated within Traditional European Universities • Academic research related to Blended Learning • Commercial best practice on Blended Learning
How could we make this? • Develop a methodology to support and enable us to find the literature • Perform a review of existing relevant work on Blended Learning • Summarise and Synthesize these reviews into reports on the state of the art
We had to… Find a database tool to collect data
Different tools to collect information • refBase • PHPBibMan • WIKINDX • Bibliophile
refBase Is a platform-independent literature resource for scientists. It has a literature dataset, a clean & standardized interface, a multitude of search options, including both a simple & an advanced search display, citation & export options
PHPBibMan Is a webbased literature database for scientific purposes. It and offer comfortable exchange of references for scientists.
WIKINDX Is a free bibliographic and quotations/notes management system. It has a article authoring system designed either for single use or multi-user collaborative use across the internet.
Bibliophile Bibliophile provide libraries to be used in any project for conversion, import and export of bibliographic exchange formats
How could we decide for one tool? How could we use the tool to collect information? How could we use the tool to write the deliverables?
Identified key elements of the literature • Title • Source (URL) • Year • Country • Language • Type (Book, Journals, Business reports, Web page, Technical monograph, power points and other) • How is Blended Learning defined • Learning theory • Short description of case • Summary • Key points
Why refBase? This was only based on my first impression: • Easy to understand • A clean & standardized interface • Didn’t have to use time to find out how it worked • Easy to enter the list of literature gatherings • Easy search options • Easy to get out a printable version of what we needed
Working in refBase Add the record in refBase under the keywords of: Theories on BL Examples on BL in Traditional Universities BL Research and projects Examples on BL in commercial practice
Making the deliverables with help from refBase Search for the keyword
Based on the search: • I could make a report and look at the articles’ abstracts • I could read a lot of abstracts in one document • Get a fast overview of the field to write the deliverables
Summary of presentation In this presentation I have described different tools for collecting data to WP2 I have described how we solved the work in WP2
This work resulted in the following deliverables: Deliverable 2.1 Theories on Blended Learning Deliverable 2.2 Examples on strategies on how Blended Learning can be integrated Within Traditional European Universities Deliverable 2.3 Academic research and Projects related to Blended Learning Deliverable 2.4 Examples on Blended Learning used in commercial practice
