  3. What is Dual Credit? In cooperation with the Metropolitan Community College System: • Certain courses taken for high school credit have an option to obtain college credit if eligible. • Missouri Board of Higher Education sets eligibility guidelines.

  4. Purpose of Dual Credit • Students get a head start on their college career. • Tuition for dual credit is about half the cost ($43.50) of on campus MCC classes. • Allows more flexibility in the course load by reducing the number of hours needed during college years. • Enroll in higher level courses sooner.

  5. Dual Credit Guidelines for Eligibility • Enrolled at PHS as a junior or senior • 3.0 Cumulative GPA • Qualifying Proficiency Test Scores • Complete the College Course Enrollment form • Appropriately completed the on line MCCKC Application for Admission • Approved by their Dual Credit counselor • Paid fees for college credit by due date

COMPASS/ACT • Certain ACT or Plan score(s) required dependent upon class being taken • College Alg. & Comp and Read require a specific English and/or Math score on ACT • COMPASS testing provided on PHS campus • COMPASS is an ACT computer based test. • Scores are available immediately upon test completion

  7. How are dual credit final grades recorded? • High school transcript • High school grade is recorded • Dual credit is not indicated on the high school transcript. • College transcript • College grade is recorded on a MCC college transcript. • Student must request a transcript from MCC.

  8. How are AP Scores recorded? • High school transcript • High school grade is recorded • AP designation is indicated on the high school transcript if you take AP Exam. • College transcript • Grade/Credit is recorded on the college transcript where you go for placement or credit depending of score • Student must request scores be sent to college of choice.

Advanced Placement vs Dual Credit • Dual Credit • College credits transfer to state colleges and universities. • Out of state and private colleges, each unique. • Advanced Placement • AP Exam required to receive college credit. • $97.00 per exam • Scored on a scale of 1 to 5 • 3 is minimum score required, but policies vary

College Costs 2011-12 Cost at the following: Maple Woods Dual Credit: $43.50 x 3 =$130.50 NWMSU: $234.89 x 3 = $704.67 Missouri State University: $186.00 x 3 = $558.00 Park University: $316.00 x 3 = $948.00 MU: $245.60 x 3 = $736.80 UMKC: $245.60 x 3 = $736.80 KSU: $445.00 (non resident) x 3 = $1335.00 KU: $679.35 (non resident) x 3 = $2039.05 Maple Woods $82.00 x 3 = $246.00

  11. What dual credit courses are usually offered? • MCC offers a full-range of lower-division general education courses: • Composition & Reading • Speech • Foreign Language • History • Math • Biology • Chemistry

  12. AP Scenario • Student enrolls their junior year in: • AP US History (1 High School Credit/AP Score of 4) • AP English Language (1 High School Credit/AP Score of 4) • AP Exam Cost: • ($97.00 x 2 classes = $194.00)

  15. Dual Credit Scenario • Student enrolls one term of senior year in: • Spanish III/Spanish 101/102 (10 credits) • Comp. & Read (Split Block) 101 (3 credits) • Speech/Speech 101 (3 credits) • Total: 16 credits at $43.50 = $696.00

  16. Dual Credit Comparison • 16 credits is above what a full time student may take on campus in one semester • (12 to be full time) • Sit in a class of no more than 30 versus 100 • No Fees (fees at 4 years continue to rise, even though tuition may be locked) • Books are Free

  17. In & Out of State Dual Credit Comparison • 16 credits at MU = $3929.60 • Savings of: $3233.00!!!! • 16 credits at KU = $10,869.60 • $Savings of: $10,173.60!!!!

  18. CLEP Tests • What if a student isn’t eligible for Dual Credit through MCC and/or doesn’t make a qualifying score on their AP exam? • Student may take the CLEP (College Level Education Program) • Visit the College Board website www.collegeboard.com/clep or call • 800-257-9558.

  19. CLEP Testing • Take at the end of the semester in which you take the course • Cost is approximately $100.00 per exam • Available on MCC campus through the testing center. (816) 604 – 3200 • Registration for the test must be done 3 business day in advance and in person

  20. Important Dates for Dual Credit September 1, 2011 FINAL DAY to submit dual credit enrollment forms. Enrollment forms will be accepted through this date, late forms will not be accepted. Drop off enrollment forms in file by Mrs. Patterson’s office door.

  21. Dual Credit Payment Information Bills mailed: Sept. 30 Payment Due: October 15th Payment Due - If payment cannot be made by the due date, contact Betty Walker, Dual Credit Coordinator, at (816) 604-3038 or Betty.Walker@mcckc.edu. Dual Credit classes will be dropped for lack of payment.
