Acids

Acids. Writing names and Formulas. Acids. Compounds that give off hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. Labeled aqueous, will have (aq) after formula Ex. HCl (aq) Must have H + in them. will always be some H with an anion (non-metal). The anion determines the name.

  1. Acids Writing names and Formulas

  2. Acids • Compounds that give off hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. • Labeled aqueous, will have (aq) after formula • Ex. HCl (aq) • Must have H+ in them. • will always be some H with an anion (non-metal). • The anion determines the name.

  3. Naming Binary acids • If the anion attached to hydrogen is monatomic the anion ends in –ide • to name it as an acid put the prefix hydro- and change -ide to -ic acid • Examples: • HCl - hydrogen ion and chloride ion • hydrochloric acid • H2S hydrogen ion and sulfide ion • hydrosulfuric acid

  4. Naming Ternary Acids • If the anion has oxygen in it (a polyatomic) • it ends in -ate or -ite • change the suffix -ateto -ic and add acid • Example • HNO3 Hydrogen and nitrate ions • Nitric acid • change the suffix -iteto -ous acid • HNO2 Hydrogen and nitrite ions • Nitrous acid • Rule: ic ate ite ous

  5. Name these • HF • H3P • H2SO4 • H2SO3 • HCN • H2CrO4

  6. Writing Acid Formulas • Hydrogen will always be first (H+) • The name will tell you the anion • Use subscripts to make the charges cancel out. • Binary Acids: start with hydro (hydrogen)- no oxygen, ic acid from the - ide anion • Ternary Acid: - start with hydrogenic acidfrom– ate anion, ous acid from -ite anion

  7. Write formulas for these • hydroiodic acid • sulfuric acid • carbonic acid • phosphorous acid • hydrobromic acid
