  2. Economic development has always been a vital part of Georgia Tech’s mission. Part of Georgia Tech’s original charter in 1885 was to help Georgia make the transition to the industrial age. Today, Georgia Tech is providing the technology needed to make the transition to the information age.

  6. Windham Castings, Plains • EDI helped company • choose equipment, • design foundry & • improve productivity. • Revenues grew 60%, • labor costs dropped • 10%. Company grew • from 4 to 69 employees • in four years. • Profiled in Inc • Magazine Dec. 2002.

  7. Genuine Parts, Atlanta • After being hit by a 10% • increase in energy costs in 2001, • company contacted EDI. • EDI helped company • with energy purchasing • and developing an energy • strategy • Genuine Parts – with 1,800 • locations – expects to cut its • energy costs by 5% nationwide.

Muskin Leisure Products, Midway • Aboveground pool company moved to Georgia • & needed help with quality system & improving productivity. • With FaciliTech support, • EDI helped obtain quality certification and cut lead times by 75%, work in process by 90%. “Georgia Tech listens and looks at what you need; they try to understand what’s wrong or what you want to achieve,” said VP of Operations Jean Jacques Arignon. “They have the expertise…and they combine classroom training and working with people on the floor…”

Savannah Forestry, Savannah • Maker of site preparation • equipment needed help with • design of new facility. • EDI helped with layout • for move from 17,000 SF • to new 24,000 SF building. • New design cut production • time by five days; reduced • bottlenecks by one-third • and decreased employee • turnover. “We have a much-improved production flow and lower throughput time,” said Austin Kennedy, CFO of Savannah Forestry. “Machine utilization is much smoother. There are no peaks and valleys like before. We can schedule our work better.”

Universal Textile Technologies, Dalton • EDI helped carpet finisher UTT adopt • a new chemical process • for carpet backing • based on soybean oil • rather than petroleum. • New oil is better for the environment and • gives the company a • marketing edge. “We will see increased sales—we can’t help but see increased sales. Our efficiency will increase and we’ll employ more people,” said Plant Manager Larry Mashburn.

Mestek, Inc., Wrens • Company wanted to • boost productivity. • With EDI help, company • improved plant layout, • cleaned and organized. • As a result, reduced lead • time by 60%, raw material • inventory by 25% and work • in process inventory 60% in • implementing department. “Utilizing lean concepts will enable us to build and ship more product,” said Plant Manager Emerson Hobgood. “The three or four days you use to do lean training and implementation are a small price to pay for positive long-term results.”

EDI Report Card • Assisting Georgia Companies: • Served 1,302 customers through projects, technical assists, counseling sessions and information requests. • Companies assisted by Procurement Assistance Center gained contracts worth $211 million. • More than 5,340 participants attended 196 training events, workshops and network meetings. • Preparing Communities for Growth & Attracting Companies • As part of Georgia’s economic development team, helped attract or retain • $14.5 million in investment and create or save 557 jobs. • Conducted 106 community economic development projects in 62 counties. • Completed 77 fiscal and economic analyses. • More than 800 economic development practitioners attended 22 educational events.
