  4. COMMON MYTH’s • MYTH 1. You can catch the flu from the vaccine. • MYTH 2. Healthy people don't need to be vaccinated. • MYTH 3. Getting the flu vaccination is all you need to do to protect yourself from the flu.

  5. MYTHS Continued. • MYTH 4. The flu is just a bad cold. • MYTH 5. You can't spread the flu if you're feeling well. • MYTH 6. You don't need to get a flu shot every year.

  6. Myths Continued. • MYTH 7. You can catch the flu from going out in cold weather without a coat, with wet hair or by sitting near a drafty window. • MYTH 8. Feed a cold, starve a fever. • MYTH 9. Chicken soup will speed your recovery from the flu. • MYTH 10.: If you have a high fever with the flu that lasts more than a day or two, antibiotics may be necessary

But my child has already received a vaccination… • It is important to have the vaccination annually • Keeps your child protected each year • Strains of flu change seasonally and the vaccine is therefore altered accordingly. • If your child has already had the flu spray, then they will not need it again this season.

  8. What about children who have underlying conditions? • Children who have asthma, serious heart conditions, severe kidney or liver disease, diabetes, immunosuppressed, or have problems with their spleen, it is important to vaccinate these children.

  9. Are there any side-effects of the vaccine • Serious side-effects are uncommon • Children may get: • A runny or blocked nose • Headache • General tiredness • Loss of appetite • These side effects are much less serious than developing flu or complications associated with flu.

  10. When will the vaccine be given? • October, November and December. • There will be clinics for children with underlying conditions during October.

  11. Are there any children who should not be immunised? • Are currently wheezy • Currently being treated with high-dose steroids. Need to be off the high dose for 2 weeks. • Have a condition or treatment that severely weakens their immune system (or someone in their household) • Have a severe egg allergy (anaphylactic)

  12. What about porcine gelatine? • The vaccine does contain porcine gelatine- this stabilises the vaccine to give the best protection • Some faith groups accept the use of porcine gelatine in medical products
