  2. Significance of John Adams • John Adams was a???? • Federalist! • Thomas Jefferson became Vice-President • Why? • Because the second top vote-getter became V.P.

  3. Sectionalism? Putting the interests of a region over those of the whole country.

  4. How did John Adams’ election demonstrate sectionalism? Southerners voted for Jefferson Northerners voted for Adams

  5. XYZ Affair What country was Adams negotiating with? The French! Why? Because the French were harassing American ships!

  6. What happpened? How did the French respond to the American’s desire to meet? They sent a letter requesting a bribe of $250,000 in order to meet. What did Adams do? Released the letter to the public, changing the French names to XYZ

  7. Why did he do that? To gain support for War with France if it came to that. What was the Outcome? The French backed down and negotiated.

  8. Adams…cont. • Alien and Sedition Acts • What was the “Alien” part of the Acts? • Changed naturalization laws • From 5-14 years to become a citizen • Could be deported with due process What was the “Sedition” part of the Acts? Could be arrested for speaking out against the government

  9. Elections Who won the election of 1800? Thomas Jefferson!

  10. Why was this significant? Peaceful transfer of power from Federalist to Republican!

  11. Who appointed the midnight judges? • John Adams! • WHY? • To stack the supreme court with Federalists before Jefferson took office… • SNEAKY!!!!

  16. WAR HAWKS • What was impressment? The seizing of American ships by the British and taking of American sailors What was important about the “Chesapeake Incident?” Was military action between the British and Americans that resulted in deaths

  18. Embargo? Why did the US impose an embargo against Britain and France? Angry about treatment of American ships and sailors Who did the Embargo hurt the most? American manufacturers
