Course Objective • Understand the fundamental philosophy of quality management through national quality awards and quality pioneers • Understand various concepts of quality cost • Utilize quality tools for quality improvements of a real world system • Learn ISO and importance of standardization • Understand the TQM philosophy and the six sigma concept

  5. Topics • Philosophy and History of QM • National Quality Award • Attributes Control Charts • Variable Control Charts • Process Capability Analysis • Fundamentals of TQM • ISO and Standardization • Six Sigma

  6. Labs • Room 203, New Millennium Hall • Three Minitab Labs • Control Chart • Process Capability Analysis • Measurement System Analysis

  7. Grading • Attendance: 5% • Midterm Exam: 35% • Final Exam: 35% • Assignments: 10% • Design Project: 15% • The final grades are based on my assessment of both absolute achievement and relative performance in the class.

  8. Homework Policy • The assignment is intended to complement and reinforce concepts covered in lecture. • Part of your assignment requires to use MINITAB. • All assignments will be posted on the Web. • In any case, NO LATE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED.

  9. Format of Assignments • Questions must be submitted in the same order as listed on the assignment sheet. • The first page should include your name and the course name. • All pages must be stapled together (paper clips, folded corners are not acceptable). • Use a ruler when constructing graphs and tables, and label axes of the graph. • In addition to giving the answer, you should recap the formula or method used.

  10. Design Project • Form your team: 3 persons in a team. • Select a system for which quality improvement can be achieved after team activities. • Submit a proposal by October 16. • Use steps in quality circle and/or DMAIC of six sigma. • Present results in class. • The due date of the final report will be announced later.
