Vocabulary Catch up (August 20-24) Noun: the name of a person, place or thing Author’s Perspective: is how the author feels about the subject Repetition: is the repeating of a word or phrase, within a sentence or a poetical line, in order to provide emphasis Imagery (sensory details): is vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) Setting: the time and place the story takes place (August 29-30) Figurative Language: language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors, to create a special effect Personal Narrative : tells the true story of something that happened to you.

Continued.. • Author’s Purpose: The reason why a text was written (to inform, entertain or persuade) • Pronoun: Is used in place of a noun in a sentence • Context Clues: words and phrases in a sentence that help you identify the meaning of words that are unfamiliar • Main Idea: the most important or central thought of a paragraph or larger section of text, which tells the reader what the text is about • Theme: The central idea, message, or purpose of a literary text • Tone: the attitude the author takes toward the subject, characters, or audience • Mood: the feeling a piece of literature creates in a reader • Word Choice: the ability to select words in a piece of writing that are powerful or paint a picture in the reader’s mind
