  2. Where it is and population • Tonga is located in the South Pacific Ocean, North-East of New-Zealand and East of Fiji. • Tonga is made up of 170 islands, mostly coral but a few of them are volcanic. • The population of Tonga is 100,000.

  3. People/Religion/Beliefs • Tonga’s social structure is broken into three groups: the kings, the nobles and the commoners. • Tonga uses dancefrequently as an art form, using dance to tell stories and to praise gods, chiefs, places and people. • In Tonga religious beliefs are very strong, and as the country follows the Christian faith Sundays are sacred. • On Sundays no shops are open, no flights leave or enter the country, and there are no dockings of large vessels or sport. • Beautiful baskets and mats are woven from palm leaves.

Economy • GDP per person is $5,100 (compared to Australia who's GDP is $924.84 billion.) • Japan, USA, New Zealand and United Kingdom are the main export markets for agricultural products such as fish, fruits, vegetables, coffee and vanilla beans. • Tonga imports foodstuffs, machinery, transport equipment, fuels and chemicals mainly from New Zealand, Fiji and Australia.

  5. Health • Tonga has one of the highest living standards in the pacific. • Life expectancy is around 70 years. • There is good access to health care with either a hospital or a dispensary on each of the main islands. • There are 4 hospitals and 14 heath care centers on the island.

  6. Education • Adult literacy is estimated at higher than 90%. • Selected Tongan students prepare for the New Zealand school certificate examination. • Primary education between ages 6-14 is compulsory.

  7. Challenges • Cyclones are common between October and April, Fonuafo’ou (island in Tonga) experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity. • Deforestation is an issue as more and more land is being cleared for agriculture and settlement. • There is some damage to coral reefs, form starfish and shell collectors.

  8. How Australia is helping • Australia has always had a friendly connection with Tonga, including trade, employment, education, aid and defence. • The King and current Prime Minister of Tonga studied in Australia. • Australia is the largest aid donor to Tonga, providing $19 million in the past year to help improve Tongan lives.
