  1. Cause and EffectOrganization Essay #2 “Addictions”

  2. Using Cause & Effect to Explain • Essay #2 is an explanation • Explanation can be organized as cause & effect • Let’s look at cause & effect organization!

  3. 2 Common Patterns: Block Chain

  4. Block • Introduction + Thesis in paragraph 1 • Body: Definition of addiction. Then, all causes are discussed as blocks in 1, 2, 3 or more paragraphs • Transition paragraph (may be 1-2 sentences long). • Effects discussed as blocks in 1, 2, 3, or more paragraphs

  5. When to Use Block • Use when there are no direct cause & effect relationships • Use with larger topics

  6. For Example, a paper on smoking….. The causes for someone to start smoking are varied. They may include: • Peer pressure (smoking to fit in) • Imitating Parent(s) smoking • Imitating Movie stars smoking

  7. However….. The effects of smoking are not closely related to the causes… • “hairy tongue” • Bad breath • Stained teeth Cancer

  8. Block Essay Structure Introduction + Thesis Definition +Cause Cause Cause Transition Effect Effect Effect Conclusion (may include solutions) Hint: Cause paragraphs and effect paragraphs don’t have to be equal! BODY 

  9. Chain • Introduction + Thesis in paragraph 1 • Definition + Cause and its effect, cause and its effect, cause and its effect in 1, 2, 3 or more paragraphs. • Paragraphs are linked together as a chain.

  10. When to Use Chain • Use if causes & effects are closely related • Use if the topic is small.

  11. Causes Feelings of “emptiness” Low self esteem Buying unnecessary items Effects Shop to “fill the emptiness” Shop/buy things to impress others “Max-ing out” credit cards, debt For example, in a paper on shopping addiction, the causes are closely related to the effects…

  12. Chain: cause/effect

  13. Think about your topic and decide which method fits it best, block or chain.

  14. What about the What, Why, How? • What = definition • Why = causes • How = solutions offered in the conclusion (or as part of the effects)

  15. THE END
