  1. SNP Workshop 1:The Number Frameworkand Planning Lessons

  2. Learning Intentions Overview To develop teacher understanding of the Number Framework and the associated teaching model • Introductions – Tim, Vincent, Leighann • Warm-up: FIO activity • What is SNP? • Progression • The Number Framework • Pedagogy • A Model for a Teaching Progression: Algebra in Number • Participation

  3. FIO Activity • In pairs • The Strategy Strut (Number Book 3, Green, L3)

  4. What is SNP?

  5. What is SNP? • It’s about making sense of numbers. • It’s about problem solving with numbers. • It’s about understanding base 10. • It’s about learning with meaning. • It’s about preparing for algebra.

  6. Focus of SNP • PROGRESSION • PEDAGOGY • PARTICIPATION

  7. Progression Step 1: • Identify and build the computational strategies of students using the number framework. Step 2: • Exploit what the students are using computationally and formalise it to develop algebra.

  8. The Number Framework Knowledge is a pre-requisite for the development of strategies and the use of strategies enables students to extend their number knowledge. Strategy Knowledge

  9. Pedagogy Use a concrete representation (Materials/Diagrams) Encourage imaging and visualisation (Imaging) Push to the inherent property and generalisation (Abstraction)

  10. Algebra in Number: Prior Knowledge & Lower Levels • Activity is for Stage 5 – Early Additive Part Whole • Stage 3-4 – use ten frames • Work with Number Lines • FIO, Maroon Number, Book 2, Link, p. 10

  11. Algebra in Number From the Strategy Strut starter, use Erin’s method of borrowing to make tidy numbers to solve the following: 98 + 46 = 98 + 46 = 100 + 44 = 144 100 + 44 = 144 97 + 85 = 100 + 82 = 182 5874 + 9996 = 5870 + 10000 = 15870

  12. Materials 39 28 40 27 Imaging 39 + 28 = (39 + 1) + (28 - 1) = 40 + 27 Abstraction a + b = (a +c) + (b – c)

  13. 29 + 98 = 32 + 63 += 67 + 78 63 += 67 + 78 82 Change the Way you ask the Question: 95 74 X

  14. 3 20 65 n+2 1 18 63 n 7 + = 9 + 7 + = 9 + 7 + = 9 + 7 + = 9 + The number in the box is always 2 than the number in the circle Fill in the box and circle to make a true statement: more

  15. Participation • Who asks the questions? • Who answers the questions? • Who explains the reasoning behind a method? • Who explains the key ideas? • Who does the most talking? • Who checks the work? • Who decides if the answers are correct?

  16. Your Turn Work in 2-3 to plan a lesson • Pick a Level (get in groups by level) • Pick a Strategy to teach • What knowledge do you need to check for first? • Plan (Use SNP books/FIO/internet) • Starter • Materials -> Imaging -> Abstraction • How many lessons would you expect the progression to take? • Present Overview to the group
