  1. First Mid Year Sales and Technical Class Room Training, Holiday Inn Resort5th September,2007 TA INSTRUMENTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC COMPANY Presenter: Farhan Akhter Sheikh (Customer Support Engineer)

  2. AGENDA Thermal and Rheology, A window look TA Product line with Snap shot Present Market Share Our Competitors Areas that Needs Attention Service & Technical Points

  3. Thermal Analysis & Rheology • A complementary set of analytical techniques • Instruments and software for characterizing a wide range of materials • Measures changes in the Physical, and Chemical properties of materials as a function of time, temperature and other specific variables.

  4. What is Rheology ?Rheology is the science of flow and deformation of matter. The relationship between stress and deformation is a property of the material. We can therefore define Rheology as the study of stress-deformation relationships. What is a Rheometer? An instrument that measures both viscosity and viscoelasticity of fluids, semi-solids and solids It provides following information about the material’s: Viscosity (which is the function of shear rate or stress, time & temperature dependence) Viscoelastic properties (G’, G”, tan d) with respect to time, temperature, frequency & stress/strain Transient response (relaxation modulus, creep compliance, creep recovery)

  5. Types of Rheometers • Rotational (Shear) Rheometers • ARES (Strain Control – SMT) • AR (Stress Control – CMT) • Solids (Tensile/Bending) Rheometers • RSA (Strain Control – SMT) • DMA Q800 (Stress Control – CMT)

  6. Rheometers Product Line AR SERIES (CMT) ARES SERIES(SMT)

  7. AVAILABLE MODELS IN CMT RHEOMETERS AR-G2 (smart geom.) AR 2000EX AR 550 AR 1500EX

  9. Applications Antiperspirant/Deodorant Shampoos Creams/Lotions Paints and coatings

  10. Thermal Analysis of Materials Thermal Analysis techniques are applicable to most material classes. Some of the more common classes include : • Polymers (Thermoplastics, thermosets, Elastomers, Polymer blends, copolymers). • Foodstuffs and Pharmaceuticals • Inorganic (Minerals & Clays) • Ceramics, metals and Alloys. • Petroleum derived products (fuels, greases, Lubricating oils, Bitumens and tars). • Materials are investigated (Loaded) in the liquid or solid state. • Over a wide temperature range -180°C/1600°C (depending on the technique).

  11. ACRONYMS DSC: Differential Scanning Calorimtery TGA: Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer SDT: Simultaneous Differential Thermal Analyzer DMA: Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer TMA: Thermo Mechanical Analyzer

  12. Thermal Analysis Techniques • Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) -Modulated DSC (MDSC) • Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) • Thermo-Mechanical Analysis (TMA)

  13. Thermal Analysis Measurements • Heat flow and heat capacity - DSC, MDSC • Weight change - TGA • Dimension changes - TMA • Modulus and damping - DMA

  14. Thermal Analysis of Materials Reveals • Low energy Transitions (b, g, Coefficients) – DMA • Glass transitions (Tg) - DSC, TMA, DMA • Softening - TMA, DSC, DMA • Melting - DSC, TMA, DMA • Re-ordering (Curing) – DSC, TMA, DMA • Thermal/Oxidative stability & weight change - TGA

  15. DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) • A technique in which the heat flow rate (Power) to the sample is monitored against time or temperature while the temperature of the sample, in a specified atmosphere, is programmed. • ICTAC Definition (For Better Thermal Analysis. Ed John O. Hill) 1991

  16. DSC - What can it measure? • Glass Transitions • Melting Points • Crystallization Times and Temperatures • % Crystallinity • Heats of Fusion and Reactions • Specific Heat • Oxidative Stability • Rate of Cure • Reaction Kinetics • Purity • Thermal Stability

  17. Q Series™ DSCs Q 2000 Q 20 Q 200 Q 2000 is top-of-the-line, research grade with all options Q 200 is research grade and expandable Q 20 is a basic DSC

  18. Q2000 DSC:Auto samplerModulated DSCAdvanced Tzero capability (T4P Heat flow signal).User replaceable Cell Pressure DSC cell option Q200 DSC:Autosampler is optional Tzero heat flow correction option (T4) for improved transition resolution and baseline flatness.MDSC is an option with maximum heating rates of 5C/Minute available.Q20 DSC:Q20 It is an Entry level DSC which does not have the T Zero heat flow corrections for improved resolution and baseline flatness.
