  1. Summary of Textile Group

  2. Prerequisites • Market study on textile market to specify the development (growth rate) and opportunities especially in the high quality textile segment. • Review of man-made fibre processes (viscose, NMMO lyocell, carbamate, biocelsol, fortisan etc.)?

  3. Raw Material Low-cost lignin-lean carbohydrates (cellulose, hemicellulose):1. Modified alkaline pulp with hemi fractionation. 2. Waste paper, waste textiles after alkaline refinement 3. Polymers from hydroxy acids isolated from side streams (e.g. kraft pulping)

  4. Logistics • Integrated raw material and fibre production. • Production should be integrated in a new generation Biorefinery concept. • Customers should be relatively close to the production site. If this is Finland, one should rather concentrate on the speciality market.

  5. Processes • Lyocell processes with ionic liquid as a solvent: both known and nocel class of IL • Investigation of a viable recovery system • Other processes:”old” Fortisan process: saponification of cellulose acetate. What to do with the huge amounts of NaOAc?

  6. Markets • High-quality textile market: fabrics from low density, low titer fibers; • Specialities: functionalized fibers • Commodity markets? based on the outcome of the market study • Total market volume (2010): 3.5 Mio t; specialities < 0.5 Mio t
