  2. Today’s Presentation • We have provided you with three handouts. • A copy of the PowerPoint presentation we will use today. • The green NEA KEYS 2.0 informational brochure • A Frequently Asked Questions handout that NEA has developed. • Please look these over for a few minutes. • Please write down any questions you may have and we will answer them at the end of the presentation.

  3. Confidential Data • The National Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the Local Education Association own the data that results from this survey. • Results may not be made public. • All results are confidential. • There is no way in which an individual teacher or administrator’s results can be determined.

  4. KEYS 2.0 Survey is Unique • Theoretically based • Empirically validated • Valid and reliable • The survey • Provides objective baselines and targets • Sets the stage for data analyses, group decision making, and program planning

  5. Survey Items… • are clear and specifically focused on issues affecting student achievement • relate to curriculum standards, instruction, assessment, professional development, resources, and school safety • contain one major skip pattern: questions only answered by staff who provide direct instruction to students

  6. School-based, Target Class-focused • The unit of analysis is the school with aggregate achievement data providing the basis for statistical norms and benchmarks • Teachers are asked to respond in relation to a target class rather than generalize to the school as a whole. • We recommend that all teachers think of the first class they teach on Monday’s as their target class. • Thisallows all students to be considered in teacher responses.

  7. Organization of Survey • The vocabulary in KEYS 2.0 is defined hierarchically: • Key – there are six • Indicator – there are 42 • Item - there are 50 • Question • 213 for instructional staff • 151 for non-instructional staff • Online administration takes about 45 minutes to complete

  8. Six KEYS of School Quality • The 42 indicators are clustered into six essential KEYS that define school quality: • Shared understanding and commitment to high goals • Open communication and collaborative problem solving • Continuous assessment for teaching and learning • Personal and professional learning • Resources to support teaching & learning • Curriculum and instruction

  19. KEY Indicators How School Data is Reported

  20. School Average All schools Average Standard Deviation 90th Percentile Score What does this graphic mean? • The red vertical line is the average of all the respondents in your school. • The horizontal purple box is the standard deviation for your school. • The black vertical line is the average of all the respondents in the validation study schools. • The yellow vertical line is the 90th percentile score for this indicator for the schools in the validation study.

  21. School Average – Year 2 School Average – Year 1 Standard Deviation – Year 2 Standard Deviation – Year 1 How can progress be measured? • On subsequent administrations of the KEYS survey, • You want your school average to move the right (greater faculty agreement on the indicator) • You also want to reduce the standard deviation (narrowing the length of the horizontal purple bar means there is greater agreement among respondents)

  22. Questions Related to the School Data

  23. Using KEYS Data… • Begins with the scores on 42 indicators of school quality that correlate with high student achievement. • School Team consisting of teachers and administrators reviews the data with a KEYS Trainer. • Puts the data into context. • Identifies the schools strengths and weaknesses. • Makes tentative recommendations for improvement. • Presents their findings and recommendations to the whole school faculty.
