  6. How does Lincoln, like Martin Luther King, appeal to traditional American values in the opening sentence of “The Gettysburg Address”? In his appeal to Congress President Roosevelt used facts to persuade. Does Lincoln attempt to persuade his audience with evidence in his speech? Explain your answer. Sojourner Truth used her personal feelings to help her persuade her audience. What personal feelings does Lincoln express when he says, “the brave men living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.” Martin Luther King appealed to the emotions of his audience to persuade them to help him solve a problem. What kind of emotional appeal does Lincoln make when he talks about “dedication to the great task,” “devotion to the cause,” and his resolve “that these dead shall not have died in vain”? What kind of emotional appeal is Lincoln making when he talks about the war deciding whether the United States can “long endure” and “not perish from the earth”? Lincoln wanted to persuade the North to continue making sacrifices and increase their efforts to win the war. Do you think his speech was an effective way to accomplish these goals? Why or why not?
