Patriots in the West and Seas • Fort Vincennes taken from colonists in the Ohio Valley • Clarke knew British wouldn’t expect an attack in Winter. • His men marched and slept in the icy, snowy marsh around the fort • The attacked at dusk yelling and screaming to make the troops sound bigger then they were. The outnumbered troops got the British to surrender. • Clarke called Washington of the West

Patriots in the West and Seas • John Paul Jones……American Sea Captain • Our first naval hero • British ship all but destroyed his ship when he declared…I have not yet begun to fight. • Three hours later…Jones and his ship defeated the British ship in one the the worst naval battles between two ships.

  6. Patriots in the Colonies • Benedict Arnold • Patriot commander who went into debt after marrying a loyalist. • Sold secrets to British to pay back debt • When colonists found out he joined British Army • Benedict Arnold is term now used to describe a traitor

Patriots in the Colonies • Mary Ludwig Hays - Took pitchers of water to troops on battlefield • Deborah Sampson - dressed as a man to fight in the army • Dicey Langston - spied on troops then swam river to tell her brother their plans • Haym Solomon - Believed so much in the fight for freedom, went around raising money for fight and by the time of his death was penniless from giving all his money to the fight.

  8. Patriots in the Colonies • Spanish help the Colonies • Gov. of Spanish Louisiana ended trading with British and allowed Colonies use of Mississippi river through New Orleans and gave them supplies and money to fight. • This helped win battles in the West and along the coasts.

  10. End of the War • Battle of Yorktown • Gen. Cornwallis of Britain asked his servant to spy on Americans…he didn’t know that his servant was spy for Americans. • Washington had servant give false information to Cornwallis which allowed Washington to surround and defeat Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. • After the loss, King wanted to keep fighting but Parliament knew the war was over and they needed to make peace

  11. End of the War • Treaty of Paris..1783 • Britian recognizes the Independence of the United States • Land to west of Appilacian mountains won in French-Indian war belongs to the U.S. • Florida returned to Spain.
