  1. Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) 14 Home Networking in ITU-T Andrew Nunn Convener ITU-T JCA-HN Former Chairman WP1/SG15 Liaison Rapporteur to JTC1/SC25 in SG15

Highlights of Current Activities (1) • TSAG, at its April 2009 meeting, endorsed the continuation of the JCA-HN under revised terms of reference. • SGs 5 (EMC), 9 (Cable TV), 12 (Performance), 13 (NGN HN), 15 (Architecture & Transceivers), 16 (Home Terminals), and 17 (Security aspects) are involved in Home Networking studies with work currently underway on a total of 10 Home Networking related Recommendations.

  3. Highlights of Current Activities (2) • In terms of co-operation with other bodies, the SG15 work on draft new Recommendations G.9960 (ex G.hn) - “Next generation home networking transceivers” and G.cx – “Co-existence of Home Networking implementations” is particularly important. Careful co-ordination with other bodies is required to ensure co-existence with other systems.

  4. Strategic Direction • ITU-T continues to develop a number of Recommendations in the Home Networking area. • The JCA-HN continues to encourage co-operation with other Home Networking bodies.

  5. Challenges • With the ever growing number of computers, audio/video devices and home automation products etc. deployed in the home environment, Home Networking is becoming increasingly important. The main challenge continues to be how to bring together the many standards bodies working on Home Networking in order to develop global standards in this area which would bring benefits to manufacturers, Network Operators and consumers alike. • Network Provider: Responsibility ends at UNI. Customer: Expects QoS at service end point (STB) -> Gap between formal responsibility and customer’s expectation.

  6. Next Steps/Actions • Home Networking is becoming ever more important and will play a vital role in applications to reduce home energy consumption (e.g. smart metering) and hence help in the fight against climate change, but at the same time there is a proliferation of solutions. There must be an increased effort to encourage Home Networking standardization bodies to work together to bring about global solutions.
