  1. Checklist for your School A Block Placement9 November to 17 December(First Teaching Practice)

  2. Preparation Checklist for Block A • Preparation checklist to be emailed to me by Friday 2 November • Not everything may be ticked but should be by the time I visit you TIMETABLES! I need them by early next week (so 9th or 10th November) so I can draw up my visits schedule Information on timetables needs to include • your name and school • if a fortnightly timetable which is week A or B (1/2 – blue/red)… • the times of the lessons, break, lunch, etc. • a clear indication of which lesson is solo, support, scaffolded… • for each lesson the name (initials will do) of the teacher and the room • for each lesson an indication of the ability of the class (e.g. set 2 of 4)

  3. Expected Balance of Training/Teaching This is a training course so you need time to train as well as to teach! • 10 to 20% focused observation (= 1 hour per day) • 20 to 30% support/scaffold teaching (1 or 2 hours per day) • 20 to 30% ‘solo’ teaching (1 or 2 hours per day) • At least 30% non-contact time (2 hours per day) Bear in mind that a teaching day is 5 hours and that • you are entitled to 2 of these hours to prepare/mark • 1 hour a week will be with your MFL mentor • 1 hour per week will be with your Professional Tutor

  4. TP (Teaching Practice) File Content Content sub-divided into: • Contextualised Information • Teaching Information: Schemes of Work for each class you teach, SEN/Assessment data, class lists, etc. as well as one lesson plan and one self-evaluation per lesson prepared/taught • Records/data may well be in another location (e.g. your Marks Book)

  5. Frequency of Lesson Observations • On average two ‘official’ observation per week (on a LON = Lesson Observation Notes) = 10 or 12 altogether • All Observations to be recorded on LONS, even if part-lessons or ‘focused’ • Official LONs will include mine when I visit you as well as one from the Professional Tutor and others by the teachers whose class(es) you will have taken over • My visits: although ‘pink card system’, I’ll send you my visit schedule via email (to the YahooGroup!) so make sure that you pass the info on to them) • QTT Standards are often filled in by you rather than the observer although the laminated versions should not make this task onerous

  6. Weekly PRD (Progress Review Diary) • The PRD, once you’ve had your 1 hour meeting with your mentor, should be filled in by you once a week (typically on a Friday) and checked/signed by him/her • The ‘Issues that cause concern’ section is for your mentor to fill in, not you! • Each PRD is numbered (e.g. for w/b 9th November it will be PRD 1) • Key information about this must be emailed to me once a week (e.g. every Friday), using the template supplied (WPR = Weekly Progress Report). This allows me to be aware of what is happening as well as to ensure that all is as it should be.

  7. Lesson Plans • Lesson Plans, in outline format, must be shown/discussed with mentor/class teacher well in advance of lesson itself • Agreed Lesson Plans will be much more effectively done electronically but must also be printed out • Note the small differences between the ‘standard’ Lesson Planning Templates and those for MFL • Shortcomings in plans often include insufficient information on page 1 (e.g. about differentiation) and unrealistic timing on page 2

  8. List of Files Your should have the following files: • TP • Evidence Portfolio with Indicative Evidence (Recording Evidence Booklet) • Evidence File with Evidence for every QTT Standard (second file) Note that • In Evidence Portfolio the Needs Analysis section is for principally meant for GTP trainees (so to be generally ignored) • ICT Audit is as done by you when interviewed for the PGCE course, with evidence of progress during the course

  9. Expectations from Trainees • No-one will be asked to withdraw from the course early unless their ‘Professional Values and Practice’ cause concern • Punctuality and Attendance (part of ‘Professional Values and Practice’) have been an issue for some at College: Caveat Emptor! • Beware of the bad impression given by staffroom idleness and ‘fiddling’ on the school computers (e.g. on the www) Tutorials: • Tutorial 2 in December/January to discuss Summative Report and Assignment 2 focus • Tutorial 3 in April during Block Placement B visit 1 • Tutorial 4 at end of course (June) to discuss Block B Summative Report do CEDP (Career Entry & Development Profile)

  10. List of Templates • Preparation for Block Placement A/B Checklist • Lesson Planning (inc. self-evaluation form) • LON (Lesson Observation Notes) • PRD (Progress Review Dairy) • Weekly Feedback from trainees (WPR) • Subject Knowledge Audit • ICT Audit • Summative Report • Assignment Cover Sheet
