  1. Deut. 3:3--“So the Lord our God delivered Og also, king of Bashan, with all his people into our hand, and we smote them until no survivor was left.

  2. Deut. 3:6--“We utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihonking of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women and children of every city.

  3. Deut. 2:32-34—“Then Sihonwith all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 “The Lord our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 “So we captured all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed the men, women and children of every city. We left no survivor.

  4. GOD IS HOLY • God is holy (Isa. 6:3) • Righteousness and justice are the foundations of His rule (Ps. 89:14) • God’s lovingkindness is everlasting (Ps. 100:5) • God is morally perfect (Mt. 5:48) • God’s word is morally perfect (Ps. 119:39, 151)

  5. Deut. 7:2 --and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.

Joshua 6:21-22—They utterly destroyed everything in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.”

  7. 1 Samuel 15:3—‘Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”

  8. 1 Samuel 15:26 --But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

  9. Unjust Destruction of the Canaanites? • God was patient with the Canaanite nations (Gen. 15:13-16) • The Canaanites were completely corrupt (Lev. 28)

  10. The Canaanites Were Corrupt • Their gods “El” and “Baal” were presented as brutal and sexually perverse • Sex was an idol (Dt. 23:18-19) • The people were brutally corrupt and child sacrifice was prevalent • The Bible presents the Canaanites as completely corrupt (Lev. 18:1-28)

  11. Unjust Destruction of the Canaanites? • God was patient with the Canaanite nations (Gen. 15:13-16) • The Canaanites were completely corrupt (Lev. 28) • Their destruction was for the moral preservation of Israel (Dt. 20:18-19)

  12. WHY WERE CHILDREN INCLUDED IN THESE DESTRUCTIONS? • CHILDREN OFTEN SUFFER FROM PARENT’S BAD DECISIONS (Gal. 6:7) • HOW WERE THE ISRAELITES TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN THE INNOCENT AND THE GUILTY?

  13. WHY WERE CHILDREN INCLUDED IN THESE DESTRUCTIONS? • THIS QUESTION REPRESENTS A REAL PROBLEM WHEN VIEWED IN TERMS OF THE PRESENT • MAN HAS NO RIGHT TO CRITICIZE GOD
