  2. What is Characterization? • Characterization is the method an author uses to acquaint the reader with the characters.

  3. How Author’s Characterize • Authors typically reveal the personality traits of their characters in the following ways: • Narrator’s statements-: descriptions of the character’s physical traits and personality (telling) • Character’s own actions: what the character does (showing) • Character’s own speech & thoughts:what the character says (showing) • Other characters’ actions & reactions to the character (showing) • Other characters’ speech about or in response to the character (showing)

  4. Apply Your Knowledge! • Each table group will be assigned ONE character. • Fill out the chart for you character—find one example of each type of characterization. • The last space is your choice!

Apply Your Knowledge! • Walkabout Activity • Now that you have information for your character filled out, you now need to complete the chart for threedifferent characters. • When the music is playing, find someone with a different character than your own. • When the music stops, find a seat and share one another’s character and traits by reading aloud your answers.

  7. Do Now • Find a seat at the same table group where you completed your character chart. • Place your Book Thief packet on your desk.

  8. Characterization Activity • Writing Prompt: Name one trait that describes your character. What method of characterization does the author use to convey the trait? How is this method an effective way to communicate to the reader what your character is like? Based on this trait, what role do you predict your character will play as the novel progresses? (Think in terms of their relationship with other characters, their possible role in the novel’s central conflict, and/or their effect on the novel’s progress). • Criteria for Success: • Must follow the format of an analytical paragraph (topic sentence, context, quote, analysis). • No length requirement, but answer all parts of prompt completely; MLA format • Due at end of class period Monday, 3/10
