  2. KEY PROBLEMS • Increasing numbers of patients referred to orthopaedic OPC • Dec 2005 >1000 patients on waiting list for appointment • A proportion of patients referred to OPC are for opinion rather than surgery • High DNA rates

  3. HOW WE DID IT • Project Started: May 2005 • Staffing: 1Physiotherapist • Funding: $150K from DHS workforce and Percy Baxter Grant • Duration: approximately 15months

  4. INNOVATIONS IMPLEMENTED • Physiotherapist based in GP practice assessing patients who would previously been referred to OPC for an opinion • Assisting GPs to navigate the conservative options in the community. • Using Medicare plus opportunities also

  5. OUTCOMES SO FAR • 152 patients assessed (May to Nov 05) • <25 patients referred to orthopaedic OPC (16%)

  6. LESSONS LEARNT • Initially expected to include falls, balance clients. • Relies on available community management options
