What is the Global Studies Experience (GSE) • The GSE involves participating in volunteer placements around the globe. • You would take one course to prepare for the placement and another course to understand the placement after it is finished. • We recommend doing the GSE in your third year of study.

  2. Why do the Global Studies Experience (GSE)? • Obtain “hands-on” skills in your field of interest. • Understand yourself, the world, and your career goals better. • Broaden your awareness of the challenges of global justice and social equity. • Money is available from the Global Studies Fund to help cover the costs. Last year each student received approximately $2,000.

  3. Schedule a) Fall semester (September – November 2013): • students explore different volunteer placement opportunities • Meet with Dr. Gibbings or Dr. Pries to discuss possible placement opportunity • apply for preliminary approval of their placement proposals (November 15th, 2012) b) Winter semester (January 2014): • Students take GS398, “Global Studies in Practice” c) Summer (anytime between May and August 2014): • Students do their volunteer placements (field placements must be a minimum of four weeks in duration) d) Fall semester (September 2014): • Students complete the post-placement course, GS399, that includes a local community service learning component.
