  3. Anna Anderson • It is believed that after the massacre of the Tsar family, Anastasia was still alive. Some had believed that she went by the new name of Anna Anderson. Anna Anderson is the name by which most know the self-identified Grand Duchess Anastasia. This woman was taken to a hospital in Germany in 1920, claiming to have been rescued from the Ekaterinburg massacre that left the Romanov family – Tsar Nicholas II, the Tsarina, their daughters, and their son Alexei – dead in a cellar. Some relatives believed her story, even after meeting her. Others were sure that Anna Anderson was not Anastasia. • Scars that Anna Anderson had on her body were said to have matched those that the Princess Anastasia had as well. Some relatives recognized her by her appearance; others felt that her physical similarities were not enough proof. Still others thought she looked nothing like Anastasia • Evidence later found in the 1990s, proved that Anna Anderson was in fact, just an impersonator. Bones of the Real Anastasia were found, voiding all controversy of the imposter. • Her remains and that of her family and servants were found in 1991. In 2007 the remains of her brother Tsarevitch Alexei and sister Grand Duchess Maria were found 20 miles away.(http://www.peterkurth.com/ROMANOV%20BONES.htm)

  4. Previous to Anastasia’s death • Anastasia, was the youngest daughter of Nicholas and Alexandra. She was the jokester of the family who liked to play pranks on people and was the enfant terrible of the family. Anastasia and her older sister, Maria, were known in the household as the "Little Pair", being the younger sisters. As well as their older sisters, they shared a bedroom and Anastasia dominated her older sister with her energy and enthusiasm. She was extremely close with all of her family and they all showed love for one another. • She was very short and thin but during the family's captivity, she became plumper and her mental development had slowed down. Even though she was living through a horrible time, she still managed to entertain her family during a performance. • http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0334733/bio • http://www.serfes.org/royal/thelostprincess.htm

  5. The Romanov Family

  6. Massacre • On July 16, 1918, at midnight the chief executioner (Yakov“dark man” Yurovsky) went upstairs to awaken the family. In his pocket he had a Colt pistol with a cartridge clip containing 7 bullets, and in his coat he carried a pistol and a clip of 10 bullets. • When he went and knocked on the door the family doctor was alert, he was already awake writing a letter which would turn up to be his last letter. Yurovsky explained his intrusion saying, “Because of unrest in the town, it has become necessary to move the family downstairs,” he said. “It would be dangerous to be in the upper rooms if there was shooting in the streets.” The family doctor understood and went to awake the family and tell them to get dressed quickly. • Nicholas, 50, and Alexis, 13. Alexandra, 46, and Olga, 22, Tatiana, 21, Marie, 19, and Anastasia, 17, were all led all downstairs, to a bare room with no furniture. Alexandra seeing the empty room asked, “No chairs? May we not sit?” Yurovsky, went out to get 2 chairs, while one of the soldiers whispered to one another “The empress needs a chair...evidently she wants to die in one.” Alexandra took one and put Alexis in the other. Then Yurovsky gave the “death directions”— • “Please, you stand here, and you here..that’s it in a row!”-- spreading them out across the back wall. He explained that he needed a photograph because people in Moscow were worried that they had escaped. When he finished aligning them, He hen called in NOT photographers, but 11 armed Bolshevik soldiers. Yurovsky stood in front of Nicholas, his right hand in his pocket and left holding a paper and reading, "In view of the fact that your relatives are continuing their attack on Soviet Russia, the Ural Executive Committee has decided to......execute you." Nicholas quickly turned looked at his family and said “What? What?” Yurovsky jerked out the Colt out of his pocket and fired at the Tsar. Soon the entire squad began to fire at the family, each of the soldiers had been told beforehand whom they were assigned to shoot and ordered to aim for the heart to avoid excessive quantities of blood. The empress and Olga each tried to make a sign of a cross as a prayer but they did not have time. • When they picked up Anastasia’s body and put her on a sheet she cried out. She was still alive. But then she got still and they continued, till they got to a abandoned place in the dense forest called the Four Brothers. There they undressed the family and collected their items and the jewels from the duchesses to resell them in a market. • http://randomnetstuff.com/page/anastasia/index-13.html

  7. The Girls In the Family

  8. Primary Source • My darling sweet dear Papa!!! I want to see you so much. I have just finished my arithmetic lesson, I think I did quite well. We are going to nurses’ school. I am very glad. Today it is rainy and very damp. I am in Tatiana’s room, Tatiana and Olga are here. When you see Boba, tell him I’m going to beat him again and that my hands are itching. I’m trying very hard to breed worms, but Olga says I stink, which isn’t true. When you come I am going to bathe in your bath. I hope you haven’t forgotten the story I told you during our walk. I am sitting picking my nose with my left hand. Olga wanted to biff me one, but I escaped her swinish hand. When you come I will meet you at the station. Be happy and healthy. A big squeeze to your hand and face. Thinking of you. Love you always, everywhere Anastasia (Maylunas and Mironenko 377) http://www.serfes.org/royal/thelostprincess.htm
