America: Post WWII

  • Concerns after the war:

    • Would the economy drop again?

    • 12 million service people will need jobs.

  • Roosevelt signed the GI Bill:

    • Provided $ for soldiers to attend college.

    • Provided loans for soldiers to buy homes/farms/businesses.

    • Provided help to find work.

  • The economy prospered:

    • Demand for consumer goods rose dramatically.

    • House building increased.

    • Baby boom: Rising birthrate created a need for more products.

  • 1946 Number of labor strikes rose sharply.

  • 1947 Taft-Hartley Act: Reduced the power of labor unions.

    • Gov’t. concerned that strikes would hurt the economy.

    • President had the power to stop strikes.

  • Presidential election of 1948:

    • Dem. Harry Truman v. Rep. Thomas Dewey v. Progressive Henry Wallace v. Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond.

    • Surprisingly, Truman was elected.

  • Truman’s plan for America was called the Fair Deal.

  • World Bank: Provide loans & advice to countries in trying to reduce poverty.

  • International Monetary Fund:(IMF) Encourage trade & prevent economic crises.

  • United Nations:(UN) To settle disputes peacefully.

  • General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade: (GATT) Agreement on rules for international trade & an effort to reduce tariffs.
