  1. Genetically modified food Sandra Sarkanbarde Andrejs Upitis Skriveri secondary school

  2. The beginning stage of genetic engineering experiments is cousidered to be early 70s, when the first genetically modified organisms were created. They were various viruses, mikroorganisms, plants and animals with several new qualities.

  3. Objectives of creation of genetically modified food • Plants improvement for bigger harvest. • Plants improvement for comfortable using. • Way to solve the hunger problems in the world.

  4. Pluses of genetically modified food • Plants are more resistable against: • Frost • Drought • Bugs • Diseases • Plants for more comfortably using, like, onions that do not make eyes with tears. • For every climate zone suitable plants variety. • Bigger harvests and plants full of nutrients. • Esiear plant transportation and preserving.

  5. Possible minuses of GM food • Genes of the improved plants could transfer to wild plants creating mutants which could reduce biological variety and make the environment worse. • You can not ignore the negative influence of GM food on people`s helth, the consequences probably will be observed after several generations. GM food can be toxic or allergic for people.

  6. First time GM corn was cultivated in 1997 in the USA and Canada. It is mostly used for forage and production of starch. Corn

  7. The first version of GM tomatoes was cultivated in 1994 in the USA. Tomato is a GM food symbol for many years. Tomatoes

  8. Papaja which grows in many tropican countries is very popular in Africa and islands. The harvest has reduced because of diseases. The first GM papajas were cultivated in 1999 on Havaian islands. Papaja

  9. GM potatoes are more resistable against frost, in some potatoes there are 1/3 more proteins and amino acids. But people are afraid of GM potatoes because all of scandals of their negative influence on mammal organisms. Potatoes

  10. Rice is one of the most popular food in the world, that is why scientists in 2000 made rice, that are full with vitamin A. Rice

  11. Scientists are working to make appletrees imune against diseases that are common in Europa. That is why green, red and yellow versions of GM fruit are not allowed to sell in shops and markets. Apple

  12. Every year Euoropean countries buy 4 milion tonn bananas from trops which aren`t GM. GM bananas are infected with fungus and in the future scientists will make superstrong bananas. Banana

  13. Scientists trying to refine soya which nutrients accidentally added a gene from Brazilian nut, witch can cause an allergy to many people. Soya (soybean)

  14. It is allowed to spread the approved food in EU countries. The food contains, consists of or is got from 7 GM rape sorts, 9 GM corn sorts, 2 kinds of GM cotton, and one kind of GM soya. One of the main food grops obtained from GM rape, corn and cotton is oil.

  15. Products that could contain GM corn • Flour, groats, semolina • Oil • Gluten • Glucose • Salad souce • Margarine • Beer • Chips „Taco shells” • Food additives

  16. Products that could contain GM soya • Confectionery • Icecream • Chocolate and products from chocolate • Meat • Oil • Food additives
