  15. What do employers who employ apprentices think of them? “Patient care has definitely improved since we have taken on the apprentices. They’re answering the calls quicker, we’re speaking to the patients much more regularly, we’re keeping them informed and we are developing the staff as we go along.” Paul Palfreeman, Yorkshire Ambulance Service ‘Training apprentices is more cost effective than hiring skilled staff – leading to lower overall training costs and reduced recruitment costs’’ Populus Survey, 2009

  16. Apprenticeships within the Health Sector • We can help you set up and manage apprenticeship programmes. • We can also help you make the most of apprenticeships for your organisation by: • identifying the right frameworks • developing a robust business case • developing your apprenticeship strategy • choosing and securing the best training provision

  17. Literacy and numeracy services supporting CQC compliance It is important! • Hidden gaps in literacy and numeracy have serious implications for efficient and safe service delivery. • Staff need to be fit for the job and have the right qualifications, skills and experience. • Staff should be competent, properly trained, supervised and appraised.

  18. Literacy and numeracy services supporting CQC compliance • SfH Literacy and Numeracy services help ensure your workforce has the basic skills in place to provide effective, quality healthcare, support staff development and improve patient safety. • We can profile your organisation’s literacy and numeracy skills levels and provide tailored strategies for addressing any skills gaps, including advice and assistance with the implementation of recommendations.

Benefits • Reduce the risk of errors in patient care particularly around drug calculations • Recruit staff who can communicate safely, with adequate numeracy skills • Identify who needs what training • Improve the quality of service provision “ The initial assessment tools are excellent! They are invaluable in identifying training needs and should help avoid any risk of quality suffering due to low levels of literacy or numeracy. The tools support our commitment to delivering safe and effective patient care ”Lizzie Shevlin, Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust
