The History Of Chinese Chess • Chinese Chess is also called XiangQi (象棋) • Evolved from an ancient Chinese game called Liubo that was invented some 3,500 years ago. • Strategy Game like in military warfare with ‘Generals’, ‘Pawns’, ‘Advisors’ etc. • Xiang(Elephant ‘象’)= Ivory from Elephant • Qi(piece ‘棋’)= Chess piece. • Han Dynasty Xiang Xi • Bei Zhou Dynasty  XiangQi

  5. Rules of playing Chinese Chess 16 pieces in each army. Red ALWAYS starts the game. Think before moving or you will make a mistake. Shake your opponent’s hand before starting the game.

Moves of Chinese Chess • The Rooks [ 车]:9 points • Only 2 Rooks in each army. • They can move forward , left , right and backwards and can cross the river but it can’t go diagonally. • Placed at the corner of the board. • The Horses [ 马 ]:4 points • Only 2 Horses in each army. • Move like an ‘ L’ shape and it can cross the river . • It can’t move where pieces block blocks the horse .Since it can be blocked , it is very easy to attack it. • Placed next to the Rooks.

The Elephants [ 象 ] or [ 相 ] : 2 points • Only 2 Elephants in each army. • May move diagonally only. • It can’t cross the river. • The Advisors [ 士 ] or [ 仕 ]:2 points • Only 2 Advisors in 1 army. • Similar to the Elephants. • It can only move diagonally in a box . • The Cannons [ 炮 ] or [ 砲 ]:4.5 points • Only 2 Cannons in 1 army. • It’s move is very unique when your piece or your opponent’s piece blocks the it , it may capture your opponent’s piece behind that blocking piece.

The General [ 帅 ] or [ 将 ]:0 points • Only 1 General in each army. • most important piece in the army. • can move only forward or sideways in the box . • Opponent must say “ Check “ when attacking it. • When it’s in check , move it out of check , capture the checking piece or block the check with another piece. • When it is trapped and can’t escape , the result is checkmate and who trapped it is the winner.

  10. The Soldier [ 兵 ] or [卒] 1 or 2 points • Only 5 Soldiers in each army. • It can only go 1 step forward when it had not cross the river yet. • After crossing the river , it can go sideways 1 step and forward 1 step.
