  1. How to Play With Your Food: Science at the Dinner Table Robert Sparks National Optical Astronomy Observatory

  2. Fill a clear plastic cup with a clear carbonated beverage (Sprite, Sierra Mist, Carbonated Water, etc) • Drop half a dozen or so raisins into the cup and observe Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  3. Raisins float to the surface sink to the bottom and repeat the process • Carbon Dioxide bubbles attach to the raisins increasing their buoyancy enough to make them float • Bubbles pop at the surface and raisins sink again Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  4. The Atomizer! • You need a cup of water and two straws • Hold one straw vertical: Do not let it touch the bottom of the cup • Hold the other straw horizontal over the first and blow hard! Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  5. The Atomizer! • Bernoulli’s principle says that moving air creates low pressure above the straw • Air pressure forces fluid up the straw Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  6. Straw Through the Potato! • Can you take a straw and drive it through a potato? Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  7. Straw Through the Potato! • The trick: Put your thumb over the end of the straw • Trapped air in the straw gets compressed • High pressure air gives straw added strength • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beELbuz9_0g Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  8. The Finale: Mentos and Diet Coke Geyser! • Do this OUTSIDE! • Drop a roll of Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke and STAND BACK! Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007

  9. The Finale: Mentos and Diet Coke Geyser! • Gelatin and gum arabic in Mentos break surface tension of water • Bubbles form on nucleation sites in Mentos • Sploosh! Pinon Teacher Workshop October 13th, 2007
