  2. SCOTTISH ENTERPRISE AND LOCAL ENTERPRISE COMPANIES • Government funded • Set up to help business set up and for existing business to grow. • Offer advice to firms, training courses, can often give firms grants.

  3. CAREERS SCOTLAND • Part of Scottish Enterprise. • Assistance with recruitment and selection. • Give information on local labour market and on employment law

  4. BUSINESS GATEWAY • Scottish Enterprise funded. • Gives information to firms on grants, taxation, health and safety and marketing.

  5. LOCAL AUTHORITIES • May give help in locating premises, give them loans or grants. • Some local authorities may give subsidised premises. Also give advice on planning permission. • The council will want to encourage firms to come to the local area.

  6. SCOTTISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE • A support organisation that firms can become a member of. • Provide seminars on a number of different topics, allow for networking opportunities and encourage international trade.

  7. PRINCES YOUTH TRUST • Give advice, training and grants to young people who want to start up their own business. • Can help with business planning, give loans or grants.

  8. TRADE ASSOICIATIONS • Provide specialised advice in their particular area of business. • For example the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and the Institute of Plumbing.

  9. BANKS • Give firms loans and other financial advice. • Help firms draw up their business plan.

  10. INLAND REVENUE • Give advice on taxation. • All firms have to pay Corporation Tax and also VAT.

  11. LAWYERS AND ACCOUNTANTS • Give advice on legal and financial matters. • For example if the firm has problems with employment law they can ask their lawyer. • Accountants may be used to draw up the firms accounts.

  12. LOAN GUARANTEE SCHEME • A government scheme that allows small and medium sized firms to get loans that may be deemed by banks to be too risky. • Government agrees to repay 70% of the should the firm be unable to pay. • Have to pay a higher rate of interest and an insurance premium.

  13. EUROPEAN UNION • Money can be available from the REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND. • Or from the EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND.
