Teen Pregnancy • More than 700,000 teens become pregnant each year. • 34% become pregnant at least once before age 20. • 80% of teen fathers don’t marry the teen mother of their baby. • 70% of unwed mothers receive no financial support from the fathers of their children • 85% of unwed teen mothers eventually receive welfare. • <66% of teen mothers graduate from high school or earn a GED within two years of giving birth.

  7. Out-of wedlock births have risen to a third of all births • The typical pregnancy rate with condom use: 1 in 7 girls will get pregnant each year.

  8. Contraception and Teen Pregnancy • 20% of those aged 12-18 using birth control pill get pregnant within 6 months. • 20% of teens younger than 18 using condoms get pregnant within one year.

  10. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s) • Each year there are approximately 19 million new STD infections. (CDC report, 2007) • Over 8 million STD's are to those who are 15-24 years of age. (Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2004)

  13. Show no Signs but Still Carry STD’s Chlamydia-75% of girls; 50% of boys Gonorrhea-50% of girls Genital Herpes up to 90% of people HIV-25% of people

  14. Chlamydia Most common bacterial STD. 3 million new infections in the US each year. No symptoms in up to 85% of infected women and up to 40% of infected men. A major cause of pelvic inflammatory disease. (PID)

  15. PID complications Fallopian tubes can get blocked Tube and ovaries become scarred together. Infertility (not able to have children) may occur.

  16. Syphilis • Symptoms in 3 stages: • Spread by skin to skin contact. • If not treated, infection can spread to the brain, heart, and other areas of the body causing severe damage.

  17. What is Genital Herpes? Two types-HSV-1, HSV-2 HSV-1is usually associated with cold sores; HSV-2 is associated with genital lesions Genital Herpes is NOT curable. Once you get it you will have it for the rest of your life.

  18. Gonorrhea Often do not know you have it. Affects men and women Blood in urine Swelling, pain Pus or discharge
