  1. Who’s Rite, Anyway? Our View of the Sacraments

  2. What is a Sacrament? • One’s definition of the word “sacrament” is largely predicated upon what they believe a sacrament to do.

  3. Catholic View “an efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us”

  4. Reformed View “an outward sign by which the Lord seals on our consciences the promises of his good will toward us in order to sustain the weakness of our faith; and we in turn attest our piety toward him in the presence of the Lord and of his angels and before men”

  5. Evangelical View “a rite or ceremony instituted by Jesus, and observed by the church as a means of or visible sign (symbol) of grace”

  16. Questions

  17. Baptism

  18. What is it? “an outward sign of an inward change” “an initiation into the covenant promises of God” “a spiritual cleansing from original sin”

  19. Initiation of the Rite Baptism common during time of Christ Matthew 3:13b-17 Luke 3:1-3 Matthew 28:19 Acts 2:36-41 Galatians 3:26,27 Romans 6:3-5

  20. Matthew 3:13b-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.  But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

  21. Luke 3:1-3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  22. Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

  23. Acts 2:36-41 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”  Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

  24. Galatians 3:26,27 “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

  25. Romans 6:3-5 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  26. Multiple Views Infant Baptism (Covenant View) Believer’s Baptism

  27. Believer’s Baptism Only those who have faith in Christ are baptized. Must be old enough to understand Gospel and proclaim faith in Christ

  28. Scriptural Support Acts 10:44-48 Acts 16:33-34

  29. Infant Baptism (Covenant) View Baptism is largely an initiatory rite into the covenant people of God. Continuation of the Abrahamic Covenant. New Testament equivalent to Old Testament circumcision It does not save.

  30. Scriptural Support Galatians 3:28,29 – “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.”

  31. Scriptural Support Colossians 2:11,12 – “In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
