  14. Lessons Learned • A Few Lessons Learned • More than one million Veterans will be leaving the military by the end of 2016 and there are currently over 900,000 unemployed Veterans. • ALWAYS treat the brave men, women and their families who sacrifice so much for America with the dignity, respect and gratitude they deserve. • This may require slightly more time and effort on your part to fully-understand and map the skills that Veterans have acquired during their service to your employment requirements. • Your organization’s Veteran hiring strategy must be a long-term, stable and consistent effort. • Understand the military culture that Veterans have experienced and deploy strategies and tactics to bridge them into your unique corporate culture. It’s not better or worse…just different and keep their families in mind. • Many veterans will prosper in a more structured environment. • There are Veterans who are entrepreneurial and eager to break out of the structured environment…you need to identify them and encourage them to branch out. • Remember, our Veterans are some of the most highly trained, highly educated, highly skilled workers that we’ve got.

  15. Resources • There are multiple incentive and training programs across most government agencies to encourage the hiring and training of Veterans including: • White House/Senator Jeff Miller/Senator Patty Murray: “Vow To Hire Heroes ACT of 2011” includes a tax credit of $5,600 for hiring a Veteran and $9,600 to hire a disabled Veteran. • VA: The Post 9/11 GI Bill: Includes funding of up to $17,500 for education and training. • Department of Labor: “My Next Move for Veterans” is an on-line resource matching the Veteran’s service record with potential positions in the private sector and “The Veteran Gold Card” which provides Veterans with six months of case management as they transition out of the military. • The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched the “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative including over 100 job fairs planned in 2012. • In calculating the R.O.I. of hiring a Veteran, ask yourself the question, “how much is freedom worth?”
