At age 7, boys were sent to school. Sometimes girls went too, but most often girls would finish their education at home. • 2 & 3. How large was the first school a Roman child would attend? • 30 pupils; the teacher was the ludi magister; teachers were typically slaves brought back from Greece. • 4 & 5. Did Roman children have to attend school? • No; education was not free. • 6. Why would children go to school? • The advantages of being able to read and write were great . They attended school so that they would be good citizens of Rome.
