Socialism is an economic theory that calls for: More economic equality among people Government ownership of key businesses and services, such as transportation, banking, and education Government planning for the economy, including some control over prices, output, and working conditions Socialism evolved over two centuries Began in early 1800s in reaction to terrible working conditions in Industrial Revolution Marxism was one type of socialism that called for violent overthrow of capitalism by proletarian workers “Utopian” socialists believed that socialism could bring about a perfect society of peace and harmony “Scientific” socialists like Karl Marx looked for laws of history that would make socialism inevitable

Karl Marx – Communism • All of history is a constant struggle between rich and poor to acquire material wealth. • This struggle goes in a cycle of revolution after revolution, ending finally in a Communist utopia. • The Communist party will lead workers against capitalism and imperialism in a violent revolution.
