ESE  GE!Research • National Longitudinal Transition Study – • 11,000 students w/ range of disabilities • Increased time with non-disabled peers resulted in: *Higher academic gains *Fewer absences *Fewer behavior referrals *Better outcomes after high school in employment & independent living skills

  6. ESE Academic gains • 41.7% (GE classes) Gain - math vs 34% (ESE classes) Gain • Reading similar gains • Intellectually Disabled Students - • 50% Gain (GE classes) vs 37.7% (ESE classes) • 40% Gain (GE classes) vs 29.5% (ESE classes)

INCLUSION • Collaborative Teaching – General term – two teacher instructing in the same classroom with any kind of model • Support Facilitation – Formal definition • Support for a specific group of ESE students • Certification – ESE only • Co-Teaching – Formal definition - NEED TO MOVE TOWARD THIS! • Specific certification – ESE and GE • Co-planning - ALL students in class • Co-teaching – ALL students in class • Co-assessing – ALL students in class

Reverse inclusion – GE  ESE! • GE students move into an ESE classroom • Significant disabilities – higher levels of interaction w/ typically developing peers • ESE students gain better communication skills • ESE make academic gains • Teaches GE students tolerance and acceptance of disabilities • Takes away the fear factor • Helps lower performing GE students to practice their skills! • MAKES US ALL BETTER HUMAN BEINGS!

  12. Remember SB 1108 ! • 20 hours of ESE training required - Recertification of Teaching Certificate! • EVERYONE holding a TEACHING CERTIFICATE must complete! • Within five year recertification period! • Even. . . . Mr. Wyrosdick!! • EVERYONE! • Except ME! I’m retiring!
