  1. ACT Advanced Prep

  2. Look at the question and determine the key words or phrases that you would look for in the passage. Look at the answers and determine which ones can be eliminated.

  3. According to Daniel Chiras, a failed technology is one that: • Cannot reuse its own waste • Produces more waste than it uses • Produces waste that is unusable • Makes durable goods such as refrigerators A and C are redundant. D appears to contradict the question (failed technology).

  4. The main point of the passage is that: • During the first four to seven months of life, babies learn at an accelerated pace. • Organisms deprived of critical life experiences may or may not develop normal sensory performance. • The development of perceptual abilities is the result of the interaction between nature and experience. • Research concerned with physical skills and abilities adds little to our knowledge of the growth in mind. The question asks for a main point. A is a supporting detail. B is too ambiguous, and ACT tends to be more specific.

  5. Which of the following best explains how Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings? • Tolkien recycles ancient mythology and religion. • The characters and settings come entirely from his imagination. • The author uses his imagination to give new life to figures from folktales and literature of the Middle Ages. • Virtually every character and place named in Lord of the Rings come from Norse myths or Old English stories. B and D include overstatements: entirely and virtually. A is also rather limiting, so it probably isn’t correct.

  6. …a CD-ROM appeals to more senses in making the connection between: A. original and contemporary set designs. B. the themes of Hamlet and King Lear. C. the eighteenth century and today. D. the written and the spoken word. A and C are too redundant and can be eliminated.

  7. The author is bothered by Albert Finney’s voice on the BBC’s Romeo and Juliet CD-ROM because the actors’ words: F. Don’t match the original script. G. Are muddled by static interference. H. Accompany the performance of another actor. J. Conjure up the tragic fate of Romeo. F has nothing to do with the actor’s voice, so it can be eliminated. J also contradicts the whole point of the play and is probably wrong too.
