Current climate • Institute for Employment Studies research for Acas suggests: • Internal workplace grievance procedures are flawed • Do not provide a way to resolve SO disputes • It encourages staff to resort to an employment tribunal • Cases • Ditton v CP Publishing a gay sales manager, who quit after only eight days with the company, won £124,000 in compensation (February 2007) • Martin v Parkam Foodsthe employer was criticised for failing to tackle homophobia effectively (October 2006)

Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 • Unlawful on the grounds of sexual orientation to: • discriminate directly against anyone • discriminate indirectly against anyone • subject someone to harassment. • victimise someone

Civil Partnership Act 2004 • Partnerships registered in same way as civil marriages • Same rights, protections and obligations assigned • Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 • extended to cover discrimination between married couples and civil partnerships

The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007 • Unlawful on the grounds of sexual orientation to: • Discriminate in area of goods, facilities and services on grounds of sexual orientation • Advertise in a way which implies that people of a certain sexual orientation are unwelcome. • Public authorities must not give customers a hostile or less courteous service on grounds of their sexual orientation.

Practical examples • University of Sunderland • Message – “…LGBT Society offers support, advice, friendship, confidentiality and an environment where people can come and enjoy themselves regardless of their sexuality.” • NUS LGBT society of the year - Hope Pride (Liverpool Hope) • Active campaigner e.g. “Donation not Discrimination”, “Admission Impossible”, oppression of the LGBT community in Uganda and disabled access on the scene. • Successfully lobbied its Primary Care Trust in relation to sexual health funding, and worked with its chaplaincy to support LGBT religious students.

What ECU is doing • Conducting a survey of practices in institutions that support LGB&T staff and students • Asking the sector for practical examples of work taking place – case studies • Working with Stonewall to identify forthcoming projects
