  3. Who is Al-Saadiq?: Lineage

  4. Al-Saadiq’s Imamah • Imamah Age 31 Yr through 65 Yr • Started 114H • Ended 148K • 34 years • Most recorded sayings were during this period

During Al-Saadiq’s Imamah • The institute of Ahlul Bayt at its zenith • Up to 4,000 scholars graduate during his Imamah • Graduates write about 400 books Al-Usool Al-Arba’mi’ah الأصول ألأربعمائه • Numerous knowledge seekers traveled from far away (and lived in Medina) to attend his discourses • He argued with the Kharijis (deviators) and Ghulaat (exaggerationists) and all other deviant groups.

The Golden Chain of Narration • Thousands of Hadiths were narrated and quoted through Ja'far Al‑Saadiq.  • He often said, "My Hadith is the Hadith of my father, and his is the Hadith of his father, up to Ali, who directly narrated the Hadith from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)."   This is called the Golden Chain of Narration. • These Hadiths were of immense importance, since they corrected the inaccuracies and set right the contaminations which had crept into this science.

  11. The Institute: To seek his knowledge • To seek his knowledge people came hundreds or thousands of miles from: • Kufa • Basra • Qum • Yemen • Syria • Egypt and many more • Many made their home in Medina for the sake of studying at Al-Saadiq’s hands

The Institute: The Students • Students became Muj’tahid مجتهد , many formed their own School of Thought (Madh’habs): • Abu Hanifa • Anas Ibn Malik • Sufyan Al-Thawri • Ibn Uyai’na • Al-Awza’i • Some of these Schools of Thought survived till today, other perished after 1-3 centuries, for lack of government support

The Institute: The Students • The core were Shi’a,close, devotees, special • They were the Special who wrote books, led discussions, argued, activists • These were the activists who even practiced the methodology to argue and present their point of view • Majority were not Shi'a, they were Aammah (general public): • Some were scholarly whose teachings later formed Madh’habs, such as Abu Hanifa and Malik • Others attended just to learn

Training in the Art of Argument • Al‑Saadiq would form groups to train in the art of argument.  • Many of his students became famous and known for their convincing ways, such as: • Hisham, Sufyan Al-Thauri, Ibn U'yainah, and Mu'min Al‑Taaq to name a few. • Disputes often rose between different scholars and Imam Al‑Saadiq himself corrected them.  • These scholars came from many countries to verify or make clear their course of thought. • Some did it to show off, especially the Atheists (Zandeeqs). (Example:  Ibn Muqaf'fa and Ibn Aw'jaa.)  • It is to the credit of Al‑Saadiq and his scholarly students that they were quite successful in steering many of these errant people back to authentic Islam.

  17. The Institute at its Zenith • During Al-Saadiq’s time, 4,000 Scholars attended his Discourses. • These Scholars wrote 400 books • The 400 books were written during his life and afterwards, up to 200H. • The graph shows growth pattern

Of the 4,000 Al-Saadiq’s Students: • Ibn Uqda إبن عقده and Najm Al-Deenin his book Al-Mu’tabar : المعتبر • Names the 4,000 student-scholars who attended the institute • Book (Al-Mu’tabar) was written at end of 2nd Century H • Ibn Uqda was Shafi’i • Sahih Bukhari quotes 70 of Al-Saadiq’s student-scholars • Al-Sihaah Al-Sittah quote 300 of Al-Saadiq’s student-scholars • Names of these students are in Book Al-Ghadeer, by Amini

Books written by Al-Saadiq’s Students • 400 books were written • Called the Usool Al-Arba’mi’a الأصول الأربعمائه • Were written during Al-Saadiq’s lifetime and throughout 50 years afterwards, up to 200H. • Were the basis of Shi’a Hadith Collections • Kaafi, الكافي • Man La Yah’dhrhu al-Faqeeh من لا يحضره الفقيهetc.) • Tah'dheeb Al-Ah'kaam تهذيب الأحكام • Istib’sar الإستبصار , • After Mongol invasion of Baghdad, we assume these books were destroyed • Students like Hisham هشام wrote more than 20 books, and so did Ibn Taaq إبن الطاق

Al-Saadiq about Karbala • Al-Saadiq stressed on people to: • hold Majlis on the anniversary of Karbala, • visit the tomb of Imam Al‑Husain, • understand the endeavor of Imam Al‑Husain, and • understand and emulate the works of Imam Al‑Husain. • It is said that he himself visited the tomb of Ali and Al‑Husain, perhaps more than once.

Control yourself when the power is in your hand; Bear in mind that if you punish a person who deserves punishment, you will simply be characterized as being just; Yet, the state of clemency is more praiseworthy and superior to the state of punishment demanded by justice. عليك بالحلم فإنه رُكن العلم، واملك نفسك عند أسباب القُدرة ........ Advice to Khalifa Al‑Mansoor

Excerpts of Advice to Al-Kadhim #1 • O son! ·    The person who is satisfied with what Allah gives him will [figuratively] become rich, while the one who looks at what others possess will [figuratively] die poor. • The person who is not satisfied with what Allah gives him is in effect questioning Allah's fairness. • The person who considers his own sins as trivial, tends to consider other people's sins as large. • The person who unveils other people's plight often ends up with his household's plight unveiled. • The one who starts aggression will pay for the consequence. • The person who digs a pit for others [brothers] will fall in it. • Tell the truth, be it for you or against you.

Excerpts of Advice to Al-Kadhim #2 • Be a reader of the Book of Allah, and a peace‑maker, • And be the one who enjoins the good and prohibits the evil, the one who contacts even those who had forsaken you, and be the one who initiates speech to the one who does not speak to you.  • And Keep away from slander, for it plants animosity in people's hearts.  Stay away from exposing people's weaknesses, for the one who does that becomes himself a target for others. • The one who associates himself with the fools will degrade himself, while the one who accompanies the scholars will gain respect. • The person who enters in the evil entries will earn being accused.

Select Sayings • Behave well with your parents and your children will do the same to you.  • Allah loves those who do good and are merciful. • The most exalted devotee is the person who is conscientious in his duties.  • The pious is the person who remains aloof from sinful deeds.  • A prudent man delays action when the proposals are doubtful.  • The prime duty of a person is to shun evil completely.  • A greedy lover of life becomes abject and dejected at last.

Select Sayings About Character • Allah loves moderation, and dislikes excess even in charity. • Good deeds are registered in the book of the faithful (Mu'min) as long as he remains silent, but both good and bad deeds are registered when he begins to speak. • Mankind would be of little value were it not for those who possess knowledge and those who seek knowledge. • A miser never gets satisfaction, since comforts remain away from him and he will not experience true joy. • The best method to live in this world is to maintain one's respect without inspiring fear, give alms privately, and keep on doing good without any selfish motive.

Select Sayings about Demeanor • Never delay the repentance for the sins. • The person who longs for the wealth of others will die in want. • The person who remains content with the will of Allah is always happy. • Do not be a party in the disputes of fools; otherwise you will lose your composure. • Never go near troublesome waters lest you get involved. • The person who visits places of ill‑repute will get a bad name for himself.

Select Sayings about Moral Fiber • Do not consult the incompetent, nor seek a help from a liar, and don't trust a ruler's friendship:  • For, the liar makes you believe that what is near is in truth far away.  And the liar may strive hard for you, yet does not truly achieve what you want.  • As to the Ruler, while you trust in him the most, he dissociates himself from you. • Some attributes of the unwise is to answer before he hears what others have to say, to object before he understands the matter, and to judge what he does not know. • Be glad when you do good to others, and fear Allah when you commit any mistake; thank Allah when you donate something to anyone and forgive him who aggrieves you.

  36. Select Sayings of Believers • Fear Allah as if you see Him.  For, if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you.  And if you think that He does not see you, you will have disbelieved in Him.  And if you know that He sees you, yet you commit disobedience, you will have disrespected His overseeing you. • Woe to people who do not worship Allah by not enjoining the good and prohibiting the evil. • The believer is good at helping others, he is light of burden to others, good manager of his livelihood, and he sees to it that he won't get stung by a bad experience twice.

  37. Select Sayings about Some Attributes • The person who is free of three attributes gets three merits: • The one who is free of evil, gets glory, • The one who is free of arrogance, gets nobility, and • The one who is free of avarice, gets honor. • Three attributes bring about abhorrence:  hypocrisy, vanity, and oppression. • The plight of the Deen lies in envy, vanity, and vainglory. • Three types of people will have nothing but good lot: • Those who prefer not to engage in vain talk, • Those who avoid evil deeds, and • Those who keep Allah in their minds very often.

  38. Select Sayings about Some Features • Recite the Quran and try to propagate Islam.  Do good deeds and save yourself from evil. • Give alms to the poor and live in harmony with your relatives. • Be heedful of Allah, upright brothers, be kind for Allah's sake, contact each other, and be compassionate.  Visit and be in contact with each other. • The believer is the one whose earning is unblemished and wholesome, whose character is righteous, whose intention is sound, who gives in charity, refrains himself from frivolous talk, does not harm others, and puts others above himself in [terms of] fairness.

  39. Select Sayings about Some Qualities • Stay away from contention, for it preoccupies the mind and leads to hypocrisy.  The one who plants enmity will harvest its consequences.  The one who does not contain his anger does not contain his reason. • The person who gives excuses to an oppressor for his oppression, Allah will cause someone to oppress that person, then if he prays, his Du'aa will not be answered, nor will Allah reward him for being oppressed. • The one who has reason, has a religion [Deen].  And he who has Deen [follows the religious life] will enter Paradise. • Hope for good from Allah and whatever He does consider it as His wisdom.  He gives wings to even ants if he desires so.

Ziyarah of Al‑Saadiq in Baqi’i • السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَئِمَّةَ الْهُدَى السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ التَّقْوَى‏ • السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْحُجَجُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْقُوَّامُ فِي الْبَرِيَّةِ بِالْقِسْطِالسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الصَّفْوَةِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ آلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ النَّجْوَى‏ • أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكُمْ قَدْ بَلَّغْتُمْ وَنَصَحْتُمْ وَصَبَرْتُمْ فِي ذَاتِ اللَّهِ وَكُذِّبْتُمْ وَأُسِي‏ءَ إِلَيْكُمْ فَغَفَرْتُمْ‏وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكُمُ الْأَئِمَّةُ الرَّاشِدُونَ الْمُهْتَدُونَ وَأَنَّ طَاعَتَكُمْ مَفْرُوضَةٌ وَأَنَّ قَوْلَكُمُ الصِّدْقُ‏وَأَنَّكُمْ دَعَوْتُمْ فَلَمْ تُجَابُوا وَأَمَرْتُمْ فَلَمْتُطَاعُوا….

Ziyarah of Al‑Saadiq in Baqi’i • Peace be upon you O Leaders of Guidance; Peace be upon you O Masters of Piety, • Peace be upon you O Proofs of Allah on the people of the earth; • Peace be upon you who were Steadfast in dealing with justice. • Peace be upon you O people of the Chosen One. • Peace be upon you the Family of the Prophet of Allah, • Peace be upon you O people whose souls converse to the Almighty, • I bear witness that you had Proclaimed and Advised and had Persevered for the sake of Allah • And that you were belied and mistreated, yet you forgave • And I bear witness that you are the rightly guided leaders; and that obedience to you is incumbent and that your speech is correct and you had invited to the Truth but were not answered and you commanded but were not followed……

Du’aa for Al‑Saadiq • اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّادِقِ:خَازِنِ الْعِلْمِ الدَّاعِي إِلَيْكَ بِالْحَقِّ النُّورِ الْمُبِينِ • اللَّهُمَّ وَكَمَا جَعَلْتَهُ مَعْدِنَ كَلاَمِكَ وَوَحْيِكَ وَخَازِنَ عِلْمِكَ وَلِسَانَ تَوْحِيدِكَ وَوَلِيَّ أَمْرِكَ وَمُسْتَحْفَظَ دِينِكَ‏ • فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ أَفْضَلَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ أَصْفِيَائِكَ وَحُجَجِكَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيد

  43. Du’aa for Al‑Saadiq • O Allah! Bless Ja'far ibn Muhammad Al-Saadiq, the treasurer of knowledge, who called people unto Thee by Thy evident Truth and Light, • O Lord! As Thou established him as the erudite to teach Thy words and Thy Revelation, to preserve Thy knowledge, and to make known Thy Oneness, to administer Thy commands, and to protect Thy Religion,  • So, bless him, with more blessings than Thou had bestowed upon any of Thy close friends, and Thy demonstrators, verily You are most Praiseworthy and Mighty.
