  2. Life • How did he became a writer? • Roald Dahl was shot down in a plane in WW II and when he went to America as a writer asked him to give him facts about what it was like so that he could write a newspaper article about it. Roald Dahl did, and the writer mailed back and said that he had only asked for the facts, but Roald Dahl had written a really good story about it. It was so good, the writer published the story exactly as Roald Dahl had written it. He got a bit well known then, and he started writing books.

  3. Life • What did roalddahl do before becoming a author? • Roald Dahl served in the Royal Air • Force • during the Second World War.

  4. Life • Dahl's life was not always an easy one. He had to deal with much serious and tragic illness in his family. Theo had hydrocephalus as a young boy due to multiple head injuries he suffered in an accident as an infant. Olivia died at age seven from measles encephalitis. His wife suffered three cerebral hemorrhages. Then he had to undergo two spinal operations for crippling back pains. In fact, throughout his life,Dahl had eight major operations and a few countless smaller ones. Through it all, he always kept a wonderful perspective on his life which shines through in his writing.

  5. Family, Childhood   • Roald Dahl was born september 13 1916, five years after his Norwegian parents, who married in 1911, moved to Cardiff from Norway. His father's name was Harold and his mother's name was Sophia. He also had a sister, Astri, but she died of appendicitis when she was 7 and Roald was only 4. He also lost his father that same year. Later Roald was sent to boarding school which he hated because they were very strict and used to cane the children for breaking harsh rules. The one thing he really enjoyed was to go to MsPratchett's sweet shop near his school because he used  to buy  tasty chocolate bars. He used to enjoy the chocolate bars so much that he later wrote charlie and the chocolate factory based on this memory of the shop.
