  3. Abstract • 1983 Global Positioning Systems (GPS) were made available to the public • People rely heavily on GPS today • Goal: Implement a temporary system in the event the satellites become inoperable • Proposed Solution: VHF Omnidirectional Radial (VOR)

  4. Long Term Sponsor Goal • Use high altitude balloons to function as temporary satellites

Introduction • Problems to be Solved • Provide an alternative solution to GPS failure • Past Projects/Customer Needs • No groups at Wright State University have attempted this project • Any person/business who wants a backup to GPS • Our Customers/Market Volume • Anybody in the government/private sector relies on GPS • Market volume would be high due to the fact GPS is so widely used • Demand • There is no backup system currently implemented so the government/private sector would be interested in this product

  6. Constraints • Laws • FCC and HAM radio license rules. Additionally, Federal Aviation Administration rules must be adhered to. • Manufacturing/Sustainability • Lightweight • Sustain weather conditions (i.e. temperature, high wind, precipitation) • Withstand Landing • Cost • This project has to meet certain budget criteria, but our funds are sufficient due to our sponsors

  7. Project Goals/Deliverables • Implement a VOR positioning system as a supplement to GPS. • Plan A – Track balloon location using VOR radials from three different stations • Plan B – Similar to Plan A, signal strength will be used to triangulate a position

Project Goals/Deliverables • Short Term Goals: • Small Scale • Implement phase shift/signal strength positioning in the laboratory • Moderate Scale • Implement phase shift/signal strength positioning around/near campus • Large Scale • Implement phase shift/signal strength at altitude with balloon

  10. Potential Difficulties • The transmitting signal does not produce a strong enough signal to analyze • Equipment for VOR is highly specialized to aircraft instruments • The lack of fox hunting skills

  11. Project Plan and Schedule • Scheduled meeting times: Wednesday and Saturday • Launch Dates and other meetings subject to existing HAB team launches

  12. Proposed Budget • This project has negligible budget concerns due to sponsor interest • At this point in the schedule we have not determined all necessary parts we need.
