  1. Properties of numbers • EVEN and ODD numbers • EVEN numbers all end with 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0. • They are all MULTIPLES of 2 – in other words in • the 2 times table. • ODD numbers all end with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 and are • Not MULTIPLES of 2.

  2. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS Any whole number that divides exactly into another is said to be a FACTOR of that number. The FACTORS of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 because 12 can be shared by them exactly.

  3. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS It is easiest to build FACTORS in pairs. Use your skills in TESTING FOR DIVISIBILITY to decide if a number is a FACTOR. Start with 1 x our number = our number, then 2 x ? = our number 3 x ? = our number and so on

  4. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS It is easiest to build FACTORS in pairs. Use your skills in TESTING FOR DIVISIBILITY to decide if a number is a FACTOR. Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x ? = 36 3 x ? = 36 and so on

  5. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS It is easiest to build FACTORS in pairs. Use your skills in TESTING FOR DIVISIBILITY to decide if a number is a FACTOR. Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36

  6. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS It is easiest to build FACTORS in pairs. Use your skills in TESTING FOR DIVISIBILITY to decide if a number is a FACTOR. Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36 5 x ? = 36

  7. = 36 Can’t do it! 36 doesn’t end with 5 or 0

  8. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS It is easiest to build FACTORS in pairs. Use your skills in TESTING FOR DIVISIBILITY to decide if a number is a FACTOR. Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36 6 x 6 = 36 keep going until a number repeats

  9. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS These numbers are your FACTORS of 36 Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36 6 x 6 = 36

  10. Properties of numbers 2) FACTORS This is one FACTOR PAIR of 36 Start with 1 x 36 = 36, then 2 x 18 = 36 3 x 12 = 36 4 x 9 = 36 6 x 6 = 36

  11. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers Look at this pattern of suns:

  12. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers Look at this pattern of suns: ? 1 4 9 16

  13. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers Look at this pattern of suns: 1 x 1 2 x 2 3 x 3 4 x 4 5 x 5

  14. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers Look at this pattern of suns: 1 4 9 16 25 This pattern is called SQUARE numbers

  15. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers The square numbers are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, …

  16. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers The square numbers are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, … These are the ones you need to learn!

  17. Properties of numbers 3) SQUARE numbers The square numbers are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, … Interesting point – SQUARE numbers have an ODD number of FACTORS – check if you don’t believe me!

  18. Properties of numbers 4) PRIME numbers These numbers have exactly 1 factor pair. 1 x 13 = 13 1 x 47 = 47 1 x 89 = 89 The pair is always 1 and the number itself.

  19. Properties of numbers 4) PRIME numbers 1 is not a PRIME number, as it only has one factor: 1 x 1 = 1 2 is the only EVEN PRIME.

  20. Properties of numbers 4) PRIME numbers PRIME numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, …
