How it all began. Born 1584 in Lancashire, England.Little is known about Standish's early lifeHe was a British Soldier . To America. While fighting in the Netherlands he met the Pilgrims who he sailed with to America on the Mayflower in 1620. . A Great Leader. He was Plymouth's military leader and defeated many Indian tribes. He was also the colony's assistant governor and treasurer from 1644-1649.Appointed first commander of the Plymouth Colony. .

    1. Miles Standish 1700-1770

    2. How it all began… Born 1584 in Lancashire, England. Little is known about Standish’s early life He was a British Soldier

    3. To America… While fighting in the Netherlands he met the Pilgrims who he sailed with to America on the Mayflower in 1620.

    4. A Great Leader… He was Plymouth’s military leader and defeated many Indian tribes. He was also the colony’s assistant governor and treasurer from 1644-1649. Appointed first commander of the Plymouth Colony.

    5. A Famous Man… It was told to be convenient to explore the shore to find a landing spot and Standish was one of the first to do this task. The second man to step on Plymouth Rock. One of the men who created the first Christian Sabbath.

    6. A Busy Man… He not only was a leader of Plymouth but he was asked to protect a new colony called Wissagusset (later Weymouth). They had been sent over by a London merchant and the Indians planned to destroy them. They then asked Standish to prevent the attack. When he arrived the chief said that he was going to destroy Standish and his army. Standish with a bad temper took the chief’s knife and killed him. Soon after the Pastor of the church heard this and ordered Captain Standish to banned from the church. He then moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts in 1631 and served as a assistant magistrate.

    7. To help Squanto… You have heard of Squanto right? Well Standish once led a group of Pilgrims to aid Squanto and other Indians.

    8. At it again… Merrimount in 1628 led by Thomas Morton was always cheating people (mainly Indians), so Standish got mad and went after them. He used a technique similar to the one he used against the Indians at Wessagusssett. He barred the doors and readied for battle. Standish then captured Morton and his army.

    9. A Known Man… Known as Captain Miles (Myles) Standish Known for his horrible temper Even called Captain Shrimp!

    10. A traveler at that.. The colony’s first agent to return to England. He also served as a representative in other New England colonies.

    11. A Great Man… Called the “Hero of New England” because of his courage and dedicated leadership toward New England.

    12. Other Facts… Died on October 3,1656 in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Near his home in Duxbury is a place now called Captain’s hill after him. The former Fort Standish was named after him. The town Standish, Maine was also named in his honor.
