  1. Middle Colonies • How were the Quakers similar to and different from the Puritans? • Both groups left England and sought religious freedom. But only the Quakers believed in equality and non-violence. • How did the English gain New Netherland? • English warships arrived in New Netherland and Stuyvesant surrendered.

Pennsylvania • Who was William Penn? • The proprietor of the Pennsylvania and Delaware Colonies. • Why did Penn show respect for and cooperate with the Native Americans? • Penn was a Quaker and Quakers believed that all people are equal. • What rights and freedoms did people in Pennsylvania have? • Freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the right to a trial by jury.

  3. The LenniLenape • The colonists called the LenniLenape the Delaware because they lived along the Delaware river. • The LenniLenape were members of the Alongonquian branch of the Native Americans.

The Great Awakening • What was the Great Awakening? • It was a religious movement that changed the way people practiced their religion. • Why did the number of church members grow during the Great Awakening? • Everyone was welcome at church services including the poor, women and enslaved people so church membership grew.

  5. Breadbasket Colonies • Why were waterways such important transportation routes in colonial times? • Few long roads had been built. It made it easier and faster to move heavy loads. • Why were the Middle Colonies called the “ Breadbasket Colonies”? • Farmers in Middle Colonies grew so many crops used in making bread. • What crops grew well in the Middle Colonies? • Wheat, corn and rye.

  6. Summary • The Middle Colonies had settlers from many different countries who practiced many different religions. • Farming and trade were important to the economy. • New York City and Philadelphia were the leading ports.
