Indian Independence & Partition • Indian Nationalists demanded independence since 1800s • After WW-II demand for independence became intense. • Gandhi, Jinnah and Nehru were some of the most important leaders of Independence • Independence was achieved with division of India as India & Pakistan in 1947 Global History & Geography / Br. Problems of Nation Building in India Pakistan • Mistrust Between Hindus and Muslims caused India’s Partition. • Pakistan and India continue to clash over disputed territories, especially over Kashmir • Pakistan further divided into Pakistan and Bangladesh 24 years after the independence. Independent Nations of Africa • Pan-Africanism Started in the early 1920s • Ghana, under Kwame Nkrumah, became first independent African State in 1957 • Algeria gained independence from France in 1962 after a bloody war from 1954 to1962. • Jomo Kenyatta led Kenya’s Independence Movement and led its independence in 1963. Independence of Southeast Asian Nations • Vietnam • Ho Chi Minh led the nationalist Independence movement against imperialist France. • Western Powers Divided Vietnam leading to war • North Vietnamese Communists became victorious and Vietnam united. • Cambodia • Communist Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia after the fall of south Vietnam. • They Started a reign of terror and killed hundreds of thousands of people.
