  2. This workshop uses resources developed by the Alliance for Inclusive Education Using the direct experiences of adults and students who where identified as having Special Educational Needs

  3. The Role of the Teaching Assistant • providing support to children with mathematics, reading and writing on an individual, class or small group basis • giving extra help to children from ethnic minorities or those with special needs • helping develop programmes of learning activities and to adapt appropriate materials • motivating and encouraging pupils • assisting with marking and correcting work • attending meetings and reviews • helping with school events, trips and activities.

  7. Activity 1 The Shield Time scale 5 minuets From your experience's of school identify these four: Something I was really good at in school My best school memory Something I’m proud of from school Person I remember from school

  8. Activity 2: Challenging Expectations ‘x’ is a child who has cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs. She has little voluntary movement and cannot speak. She is incontinent. She has been assessed in the past as having a development delay of over 6 years. She also has diabetes. How do you imagine her life when she is 25?

  10. 2007 “The person described in this case history is now 20, studying English at University with a package of support which is paid for and managed by her mother under the Direct payments scheme. Some of the assistants have learned to facilitate her speech and written work using Facilitated Communication. She is also part of a group of young people who offer training to mainstream schools and colleges on inclusion, for which she gets paid. Her assistants are trained by her mother to manage her diabetes”

  11. 2014 Finished Uni 2010 with great a well deserved English Degree. Continues to deliver training, has set up a group for people without voices. Is a member of the local poetry group and has published her own book of essays and poetry. Is a present moving house in preparation for independent living.

Activity 4: Relationships Circles 5mins Fill In you circles • People closest to you- chant imagine living without • People who are still close but not quite make it into A • Acquaintances and colleagues- people who you have shared activities or interest who learn form you or you from them. Social groups etc. • People who are paid to be in your life

Activity 4: Relationships Circles 5mins • How many people in total – all circles? • Will this change in the future is it different form 10 years ago? • What makes the difference between A and B • This is your “Normal” life Circle. “C” is very important this is where we build new life circles from form relationships have a ‘Voice’ in the world. If you have a disability especially from childhood the view is different.

  15. Reflection What do you think children with SEN would do with these activities? How would they remember their school days? How will this shape their futures ? Will their school experiences prepare them for the future ?

  16. Will you be the one they remember, who made school and learning relevant and a live to them ? Who helped them to work with other students and be valued?
