  1. Stem & Leaf Plots Definition of Stem & Leaf Plots - shows data arranged by place value. You can use a stem and leaf plot to show how often data values occur and how they are distributed

  2. Stem and Leaf • Define: In a stem-and-leaf plot each data value is split into a "stem" and a "leaf".  The "leaf" is usually the last digit of the number and the other digits to the left of the "leaf" form the "stem".  The number 123 would be split as: stem  12 leaf 3 Steps: • 1st: Put data into numerical order • 2nd: Separate each number into a stem and a leaf • 3rd: Group the numbers with the same stems.  List the stems and leafs in numerical order.  • 4th Prepare an appropriate legend(key) for the graph.

  3. Stem and Leaf

  4. Steps to create a Stem & Leaf Plot Step 1: Group the data by ten digits. Step 2: Order the data from least to greatest Step 3: List the tens digits of the data in order from least to greatest. Write these in the “stems” column. (Example: The number 42; the number 4 is the stem). Step 4: Record the ones digits of each data value in order from least to greatest. Write these in the “leaves” column. (Example: The number 42; the number 2 is the leaf). Step 5: Title the graph.

  6. Example of Stem and Leaf Plots Make a stem and leaf plot of the algebra test scores given below. 56, 65, 98, 82, 64, 71, 78, 77, 86, 95, 91, 59, 69, 70, 80, 92, 76, 82, 85, 91, 92, 99, 73 What will you do first?

  7. Example of Stem and Leaf (cont.) 56, 59, 64, 65, 69, 70, 71, 73, 76, 77, 78, 80, 82, 82, 85, 86, 91, 91, 92, 92, 95, 98, 99 1st put the scores in numerical order.

  8. Steps to Example (1) Since the data range from 56 to 99, the stems range from 5 to 9. (2)To plot the data, make a vertical list of the stems. (3) Each number is assigned to the graph by pairing the units digit, or leaf, with the correct stem. (4) The score 56 is plotted by placing the units digit, 6, to the right of stem 5.

  9. Your Stem and Leaf Plot would look like this …. Stem Leaf 5 6 9 6 4 5 9 7 0 1 3 6 7 8 8 0 2 2 5 6 9 1 1 2 2 5 8 9

  10. Let’s take this a little it further Answer the following questions: • What was the lowest score on the algebra test? (2) What was the highest score on the algebra test? (3) In which interval did most students score?

  11. Here are the answers…. (1)What was the lowest score on the algebra test? 56 (2) What was the highest score on the algebra test? 99 (3) In which interval did most students score? 90 to 99

  12. Let’s Try an Example of a Stem & Leaf Plot Number of Card Tower Levels
